HAIR LOSS VS HAIR SHEDDING. Two terms that are NOT created equal.
Hair Shedding + what it is:

Hair shedding is a normal, temporary part of the natural hair growth cycle (specifically the telogen phase).
We all shed about 50–100 hairs per day as older hairs make room for new growth.

Why it happens:
• Stress, illness, or surgery
• Postpartum or hormonal shifts
• Rapid weight loss or restrictive dieting
• Seasonal changes
• Medication or anesthesia

Key indicator:
You’ll notice more hair in your brush or shower drain — but the hair is evenly distributed across the scalp, and new growth can often be seen at the hairline or part line.

Example:
Telogen effluvium is a classic shedding condition — it’s diffuse, temporary, and reversible once the trigger is addressed.
Hair Loss + What it is:

Hair loss means the hair follicle itself is affected, damaged, or shrinking — which leads to less regrowth or permanent thinning in certain areas.

Why it happens:
• Genetics (androgenic alopecia)
• Autoimmune conditions (alopecia areata)
• Chronic inflammation or scarring
• Hormonal imbalance (thyroid, PCOS, menopause)
• Excessive traction or tight styles

Key indicator:
You’ll notice visible thinning, widened parts, or patchy areas, and often the hair in those areas doesn’t regrow as it should.
Think of it as this. Shedding is when your hair is releasing, but new growth is still coming in. Hair loss is when the follicle isn’t bouncing back the way it should — so we need to find out why and help re-stimulate those follicles.
