Charlottetown, PEI-Charlottetown Farmers Market Looking for New Permanent Location

As it stands, the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market (CFM) will be unable to return to 100 Belvedere Avenue.

Although the CFM Cooperative owns the market building, it sits on federal Crown land. Recent communication clarified that Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will not sell the land or enter into a long-term lease agreement with the CFM. The federal government has identified the experimental farm, including the farmers market location, as a potential resource that might be needed in the future so the only leasing arrangement that they would consider is year-to-year with potential to evict at any time. As well it is our understanding that L’Nuey wishes for the experimental farm property to be transferred to them.

For the CFM to repair or use the building the federal government must enter a consultation process with L’Nuey, with an unpredictable timeframe, even multiple years, leaving us without a clear path forward. Without the ability to repair or renovate our building until this consultation process is complete, and without the assurance of long-term use of the building, we have been forced to make the difficult decision to now look for a new long-term home.

CFM is now focusing on a new-build option that will better serve the community at large.

It is now more important than ever to continue supporting our vendors at the temporary location at 614 North River Road. We will continue to serve you at this location while we work towards a better future for our market.
