Sooo yesterday in my stories I shared a post from a friend and colleague @aleenakanner (and if you aren’t already following her you definitely should) about why progressive lenses can have a negative impact on your body.

I got SO MANY responses to this story that I thought I should share a reel with more details as to why this matters for you (or maybe it doesn’t) and what you can do about it.

Basically, progressive lenses confuse your brain, in two ways:

1️⃣They take away your peripheral vision. we rely heavily on our peripheral vision for postural freedom, balance, and stability, as well as feeling “safe” in our body, i.e. not going into fight or flight or freeze states unless it’s actually appropriate to do so.

2️⃣Your brain expects to see wide space above and narrow space below (think sky above, ground below). When we wear a progressive, we are looking at the distance (above) with less magnification than the near (below). This is the OPPOSITE of what your brain expects, and can create confusion in your nervous system.

In my EXPERIENCE most optometrists will not be looking for how your glasses affect your body (or anything below your eye balls) unless they have advanced training in this concept, or they are a neuro optometrist.

No shade to optometrists! I would not know this with traditional physical therapy training. They are trying to do the best job they can to make your life better by giving you a convenient option! However we are finding for some that this convenience causes other inconveniences.

Some people tolerate progressive lenses better than others. So if you have NO issues (headaches, tension in your body, neck pain, weird pains that don’t go away and don’t have a clear explanation of why, dizziness) then don’t worry about it!

But if you do, and you wear progressives, you MAY want to talk to a @posturalrestoration provider in your area.

I know you don’t want to make this change, and you don’t have to! It’s just my job to educate you and you can do with that information whatever you like ❤️

Did I freak you out? Let me know! 👇
