Small daily habits can make a BIG difference when it comes to managing TMJ dysfunction 👏
If you’ve been diagnosed with TMJ dysfunction, here are some important do’s and don’ts that may help reduce stress on the jaw and surrounding muscles.
✔️ Support your jaw while yawning
✔️ Maintain good posture
✔️ Keep your teeth slightly apart at rest
✔️ Use your night guard if prescribed
✔️ Focus on nasal breathing and tongue posture
And avoid habits like:
❌ Clenching or intentionally clicking your jaw
❌ Nail biting or chewing pens/gum
❌ Slouching and forward head posture
❌ Taking very large bites or chewing hard foods
TMJ dysfunction can look different for everyone, which is why proper assessment is so important. Treatment should always be individualized based on the root cause and symptoms present.

Your jaw doesn’t work alone… muscles, posture, and movement patterns all play a major role in TMJ dysfunction. 👀
The masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, and lateral pterygoid muscles help you chew, speak, yawn, and open your mouth. When these muscles become tight, overactive, weak, or imbalanced, they can contribute to:
✔️ Jaw clicking or clunking
✔️ Pain with chewing or yawning
✔️ Limited mouth opening
✔️ Headaches and facial tension
✔️ Teeth clenching or grinding
The good news: if the cause is musculoskeletal, physiotherapy treatment may help improve symptoms through assessment, manual therapy, exercises, posture correction, and education.
