My nephew has rigged up a passive solar water heater to his campertruck. It's heated in the black abs and then it’s gravity feed is also presurized with a bike pump! Q; What chalange would l have to enlarge his system to 80” of 4’ pipe to hold 52 gal at 436 lb.?

A: I would go no bigger than 2” on the pipes for weight and thermal transfer reasons.

If you’re doing a complete rebuild and you can mount directly into the formers then I would put a mounting point at each former the whole length of the pipe. This would help distribute the weight evenly and reduce the chances of roof failure.

Thermal distribution. So the only part of the water being heated is the portion directly touching the pipe. The thicker the diameter, the longer to heat. Think of cooking a hot dog in the oven versus a meatloaf or turkey and which would cook faster. The smaller pipes would give a higher surface area ratio and would heat faster. Since you’re linking it in with your water heater make sure the highest point of the solar heater goes into the bottom of the water heater tank and top of the heater tank goes to the bottom of the solar array.

If you’re putting a pump in the system I’d suggest putting a temperature sensor at the top of the array and another near the bottom of the heater tank. The array sensor would close the pump circuit when the water temp hits a set temperature (lets say 120F) and starts the pump cycling water through the system. When the array temp hits the open circuit temp (lets say 90-100F) it turns off the pump. The switch near the tank is your over temp switch that would open the circuit if the water coming out of the tank exceeds the preset temp.

What you would end up with is an automated system that would efficiently transfer water without allowing the tank temps to become dangerously high.

Due to the huge strain covid 19 has put on our operations, BERKANA closed its doors at 438 Clarence St on December 31, 2020. We have a new location secured but the impact of this pandemic and lockdown has put a pause on our ability to reopen promptly. There is nothing more that I would like than having a place to work for Sarah, Edi, and myself. I would much rather have my hands in your hair than sitting on them. Our journey continues.
