What have I been up to?? LOTS!! Here is a taste.

Scientists are not completely certain on exactly what causes grey/white hair.
As people age, melanin production slows down and the quantity of melanin produced reduces, and in some cases completely stops.
This can give the hair a lighter and in some cases a completely white appearance.
Pure white hair is void of color but not of pigment. You can see in the picture on the right the strands of white hair still have a little pigment in them, however it is not enough to give the hair the depth of color for it to look “pigmented” to our naked eyes, it looks white.
It is also interesting to note that with this decreasing pigmentation, the medulla within the core of the hair can appear, even if a medulla was not previously present in that particular strand of hair. And if the medulla was present in that hair preciously, it begins to enlarge.
Additionally, when hair reduces pigment production and becomes white, the cuticle cells begin to multiply.
As a result there is less room in the hair for artificial pigment and the hair can become more coarse in texture.
These are contributing factors as to why white hair can become resistant. The hair fiber looks like a tube and the hairs elasticity can change, resulting in increased stiffness and reduced manageability.
White hair is more difficult to color than natural hair which is why it requires special considerations. -Beth Minardi
