Customers often ask me what the big difference is between salon and supermarket hair dyes.

From a salon perspective:
The dyes we use in salons are for professional use only. This means their formula is designed to be mixed in a specific way and in specific proportions depending on the hair's condition. We can control the oxygen level, the color intensity, and create color blends to cover gray without it turning brassy or overly gray. We also take into account any highlights, bleaching, damage, etc.

As for the box dyes from supermarkets/convenience stores:
They are usually ammonia-free, but:
They don't cover gray hair like salon dyes, especially if the gray is heavy or severe. They last for about 6 weeks, and with washing, they fade and loosen. Sometimes, they aren't enough for all of the hair if it's thick or long. The most dangerous thing is if you have highlights or bleached hair and apply a store-bought dye box. Many brands can turn highlights green or other strange colors because no one is balancing the color correctly.

Personally, when I work, if a client has long hair and highlights and wants to cover them with a single, even color, I use salon dyes and select the formula to match your hair type. We do a strand test first to cover the gray and preserve the hair's health as much as possible. Ultimately, the decision is yours and depends on your home's budget, but if you have highlights, bleached hair, or noticeable gray and you're worried about your hair, I advise you not to risk using a store-bought dye box.
