From the annals of ancient wisdom (a.k.a. random thoughts of some guy) - a small business is like a garden! You cultivate the soil, you plant the seeds, fertilize, water... and that's about it!

For reference, consider the following images -
Fig. A (a fancy sandwich board sign showing our new offerings for ladies & girls)
Fig. B (a somewhat fancier, more ad-free garden)

So, consider helping us grow into a beautiful... uh... barbershop flower? I'll put some more thought into the next post, I promise.

And in case your hair is growing like a bad w**d...

Here's a shout-out to West Ottawa's best kept secret haircut and hairstyling specialist...
*DRUMROLL PLEASE*

That's our head stylist, Deb!

We like to say this a lot: Deb's a gem! And a rare one - it's rare to find someone with a more thorough understanding of hair of all kinds than someone who's been in the trenches as both a barber and a stylist: she's a professional licensed stylist of 16+ years AND has worked as a senior barber in shops all over Ottawa.

After being with Giacinto's Barbershop for almost two years, it's time to let the secret out!!
Check her out every Saturday and Sunday right here at the barbershop!

It's been a rough and rainy Canada Day all over Ottawa, and the sky over our little shop was no exception. Many of us are at now at home, kind of bummed out with cancelled plans, Canadian flags soaked with what felt like a series of mini monsoons.

Might be one of those times to reflect again.

I can only speak to what I see from the people I know and love in the community, the very people we see on a near-daily basis in our barber chairs.

For younger adults, it's certainly been stormy for a long time in a lot of ways. Uncertainty in education, jobs, shelter, and raising a family.

For our elder friends, the world has quickly turned on its head so fast that it's impossible to plan ahead or just make sense of the present anymore.

For all of our neighbors who ever had hopes or dreams, it seems everything is a just a little more challenging than it should ought to be. I would say that's because it certainly is.

But, and it may seem impossible at the worst moments, the sun always comes back out again. The soaked flags and sandwich-boards dry up. Life goes on, stronger than before, refreshed by the rain, strengthened by the challenges.

We're all stronger and more resilient than ever before, because we have to be. Personally, I've learned more skills and gained more mental endurance in these past couple of years than ever before.

I don't hold any political power, and my business is a tiny corner barbershop. What I do have is the ability to send a message to everyone who can see it, and that's to cherish the resilience you've gained. That includes not in your personal life, but in your interactions with friends, family and even acquaintances.

In other words, rain might blow away a billboard with a false promise, but it only makes the community stronger.

Now that I'm done waxing poetic like a lunatic again... back to business!
Please, do come see us next to the post office right here in the village of Carp.

If it's in our barbershop, it has a story!

Special thanks to Huntley Township Historical Society for providing this painstakingly reconstructed map of old Huntley! 1863 was the FIRST year the Carp Fair and still before Canadian confederation as the "Dominion of Canada"!!

The map is divided into huge tracts, many of them settled and owned by the ancestors of a lot of our neighbors. Argue, McBride, Downey, Cavanagh, Boyd, just to name a few.

If you look closely you'll see our little intersection in Carp Village, dotted with a handful of buildings. Most of them burned in the 1910's but some of their foundations still remain, like at the Ridge Rock Brewery, previously Carp Motors, and before that, a small commercial building housing a pharmacy.

So, in our own small way, we're a part of a long history. It's an honor to be a part of that, especially as a recent transplant from Quebec and being from an Italian family, only about 70 years or so in this country and still learning.

Check out the HTHS website if you want to buy your own copy as well as other publications, full of rare old photos and rich in local history:
https://www.huntleyhistory.ca/publications.html

And of course come by our shop, we have great haircuts with the loveliest staff in West Carleton :) Not to mention lots of historical books and other storied nick-nacks, from our family and from all over West Carleton and beyond.

Come see us & bring the whole family (and ladies on weekends)!

You can take the farmer out of the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the farmer.
Today I'd like to yap a bit, so please bear with me since it's our day off, and a good time to reflect.
This is Giacinto in his barbershop, around age 84. You can see he was always surrounded by foliage. The seedlings on the windowsill were for the garden out back. He had ample amounts of flowers, even a small tree. He even kept African Violets in the colder months.
It didn't strike me as odd at the time, because I was so used to it. Gardening was just something you did. Thinking back on it recently, I asked my father why it was so important to his dad. His answer was very prosaic: he grew up as a farmer, duh (thanks, dad). So I guess the old saying is true; it was just unimaginable to him to not have at least a garden.
He was a very humble, practical man. One time he needed business cards, and when asked about the design, he just said "give me the cheapest"! And when we went out for walks, he would always be hunched over foraging various greens and mushrooms. So why would he bother growing so many flowers? They don't make a good meal, and they take a lot of care, basically just to sit there and look nice.
So in the end, maybe he was more sentimental than he'd like to admit. Going from a tiny rural village in southern Italy to the middle of a big city like Montreal, this must've been one of his ways to keep a bit of home with him.
The particular plants and seeds he grew up with were lost, most of them wouldn't grow here anyway. But just the concept of having them was a necessity to him. Our family's barbershop here in Carp is similar in that way. Though the barbers, customers, location and hairstyles are all different, having grown up in a barbershop, it felt like a huge gap before we opened our shop here some 2.5 years ago at this point.
