We're BOB obsessed ❤️

I moved to Canada as a Permanent Resident on June 1, 2018, without truly knowing what it meant to be Canadian. At that time, I was an engineer, but I made the bold decision to take over Pubwells, a local pub in the quiet part of Little Italy, with no prior experience. That journey began on August 1, 2019. Just a few months later, COVID hit, and I was on the verge of bankruptcy. Many of you know the rest of this story. I tried to make it. We tried to make it. Everyone helped me stand up again—my staff, my neighbors, my family, anonymous donors, my landlady, my ward chancellor, my musician friends, and the five wise men who spent every night at Pubwells after COVID.

I gave everything I had to this battle, and today, Pubwells is known as an established part of the community. I went from trying to save a failing business to inspiring others—my fellow workers, other newcomers, and even my own son.

It’s been a long journey. Did I break some hearts along the way? Unfortunately, I did. Did I make mistakes? Of course! There’s a learning curve for everyone, and l am truly sorry. Yet through it all, I’ve come to see that Canada is more than a new “country of residence”— It’s where we call home!

Last year, I was proud to finally become a Canadian citizen. Now, I’m excited to announce that we’re opening another location in downtown Ottawa—formerly known as the Earl of Sussex pub—on Sussex Drive in just a few months. I want to thank @ChristopherHetherington and Natalie Belanger at the NCC for this opportunity, David Sugarman (@David.Sugarman.7), my amazing real estate agent and business mentor, and Rama Lahiji LLP for his invaluable legal advice in making this dream a reality. Cheers to everyone, and thank you for all the support!

Cheers,
Hamid

P.S. The gentleman in the older photo is Moji, the previous owner of Pubwells. He moved to Canada after the 1979 Iran Revolution and opened the pub in 1991. He chose the lion from the pre-revolution Iranian flag for the Pubwells logo, but instead of holding a sword, the lion holds a beer! To me, that’s what Pubwells is all about: spreading peace and love through the pints we serve to our customers. 11/01/2024
