When you post a picture, do you have a habit of checking back regularly to see how many likes or comments youโ€™ve received?

If so, itโ€™s likely that youโ€™re gaining a sense of validation from using social media.

While thereโ€™s no issue with sharing pieces of your life with your peers and community, things can get out of hand if you attach your worth to the number of likes you receive on an image that you post.

Remind yourself of this quote by Eleanor next time you post something online!

Ninety percent of teens say that cyberharassment is a problem that affects other people in their age group, and 63% recognize cyberbullying as a major problem.

Unfortunately, cyberbullying and harassment donโ€™t just affect people of a certain age. Just scroll down through any public comment section, and youโ€™ll likely find harsh words, offensive name-calling, or the spreading of false rumors.

Do you think that cyberbullying and online harassment is an issue? If so, how do you think it might affect someone to read negative or unkind feedback on a public online forum?

Many studies have researched the association between mental health (specifically depression and anxiety) and social media. Most of these studies indicate that time spent on social media is correlated with depression and anxiety, but that doesnโ€™t mean that social media causes these problems.

As of yet, itโ€™s unclear as to whether social media use leads to symptoms of anxiety and depression or if people who are already more depressed and anxious have a tendency to use social media more than their peers.

What we do know is that excessive social media use can worsen these symptoms.

It can be difficult to wean yourself off of social media entirely, especially if it currently takes up so much of your day.

Instead of going cold turkey, try picking one day of the week to reduce social media use. Plan for other activities on that day to keep you distracted so that checking your notifications is the last thing on your mind.

In a study from 2020 titled โ€œThe Welfare Effects of Social Media,โ€ researchers found that people who deactivated their Facebook account for a month reported lower depression and anxiety, as well as increased levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

Psychologically speaking, when the outcome is unpredictable, a behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot machineโ€”if players knew that they would never win money, they wouldnโ€™t play. However, because thereโ€™s potential for a future reward, players keep the slot machines in use.

Social media can work similarly to a slot machine in that one doesnโ€™t know how many likes theyโ€™ll get or how many comments theyโ€™ll receive. This possibility of a desired outcome keeps users coming back.

Social media platforms are designed to be addictive.

Notifications, for example, activate the brainโ€™s reward center by releasing dopamine, a โ€œfeel-good chemicalโ€ linked to pleasurable activities like s*x, food, and social interaction. This feeling of receiving a notification is often so rewarding that we stop everything weโ€™re doing, even if weโ€™re in the middle of another task, just to read what the incoming message is about.

Scrolling through someoneโ€™s thoughtfully-curated, highlight reel of exciting, beautiful, and filtered moments can quickly trigger feelings of low self-worth and the desire to be more fun, well-traveled, successful, attractive, thin, happy, healthy, etc...the list goes on.

These virtual encounters set the bar falsely high for everyone seeing those images without additional context and can lead to things like body image issues, eating disorders, and a general increase in stress.
