Isn't it amazing how the same navy blue can look so different under various lighting conditions? This phenomenon, known as metamerism, occurs when two colors match under one light source but appear different under another. Notice how the navy dramatically shifts from fluorescent to LED to daylight. π€―
It's a fascinating aspect of color science, especially for those interested in personal coloring or accurately swatching a color's undertone. Understanding metamerism can be a game-changer!
Let's explore the world of color together!

Nature's color palette never ceases to amaze! πΊπ¨
I thought I had found my first mixed spectrum flower, but this stunning hibiscus surprised me once again! At first glance, the center might seem like a blue-based pink, but it's actually a yellow-based red with beautiful tinted areas.
This gorgeous bloom showcases a split complementary color scheme, featuring yellow and red just one step apart on the color wheel. Just imagine how fresh and fun this combo would look in an outfit, craft project, or home decor! πβ€οΈ
Fun fact: If the center had been orange instead of red, weβd be looking at an analogous color scheme. Natureβs color theory lessons are the best!
Training your eye to see colors accurately takes practice, so keep exploring and learning. You never know what beautiful surprises youβll discover next! β¨

π Lessons in Color from Nature's Patterns π
This image of ripening berries beautifully illustrates the color principles outlined by H. Barrett Carpenter - principles that we can apply to our personal style, home decor, and creative crafts.
On the right, the unripe berries showcase muted, cooler green tones. These softer, less saturated hues can work wonderfully for a calming, fresh aesthetic in things like home accents or a subtle makeup look.
As the berries ripen, we see them shift towards warmer, more vibrant yellow and orange tones. These bolder, energetic colors are perfect for adding a pop of life and personality - whether it's an eye-catching accent wall, a vibrant floral arrangement, or a fun, colorful clothing piece.
The gradual progression from green to yellow to orange also demonstrates how colors can harmoniously flow and complement each other. Embracing this natural color harmony is key for crafting cohesive palettes in our personal style, home decor, and DIY projects.
Observing the beautiful colors in nature can inspire us to experiment more confidently with color in our creative pursuits. The lessons are all there, waiting to be discovered.

Color is all around us. I grew up in Eastern Europe and our home was on a Peninsula looking out onto the Baltic Sea. My favorite thing was watching the pastel blue-green shades of the water turn deep grays and steel blues when a storm was coming in. Even the differences in colors in the forest, depending on the time of day or Season, were beautiful. Monet and many other Impressionist artists used to paint the same scene over and over again. They saw beauty in the different lighting. For me, I always thought of it as the many moods of the Baltic Sea, every version breathtaking.
In comparison humans can seem.. well.. perhaps a little boring?! π With different variations of yellow, brown, red, and beige skin tones. However, on closer look, a brown eye isn't always simply a "brown eye". I often see yellows, deep blues and teals, aubergine, rusts, and yellows, each color perfectly balanced to the person to whom they belong. As humans, we can choose which colors we wear and surround ourselves with. When I see people choosing colors in harmony with their undertones, for me, it is like everything else in creation. Breathtaking. π
Choose Colors that match your Undertones πππ

Color Analysis - Fact vs Myth π
Can any Skintone color be any Season?
π΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈ
The simple answer when talking about undertones is our skin tone is either yellow-based or blue-based. There are neutralized skin tones, however, they will still have colors that lean blue-based or yellow based. Each Season has a certain quality about their skintone also.
Summers have a pinky flush, Winters have a colorless look that can have a gray overcast.. we can sometimes see some blue or red coming through, Springs' skin can be quite yellow and Autumns have a red-orange quality about their skin tone... you see this in all values (light to deep). When we wear colors that are harmonious with our skintone we will look fresh and bright.
Why is that?
What we are seeing is the colors after-image effect! When we have blue-based skin tones and wear blue-based colors the image it casts onto our face is the opposite color on the color wheel - so a yellow-based after-image. This is why when blue-based skin tones wear colors blue-based colors it warms their complexion and when yellow-based skin tones wear yellow-based colors it cools their complexion.
Myth vs Fact - Skin overtones vs undertones π
π΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈ
Myth ...You can have cool skin and be a yellow-based Season.
Fact ...You can have cool overtones and be a Yellow-based Season. However, if your skintone base/undertone is blue-based you are a blue-based Season. Often I see Color Analysis explanations that are overly complicated and if I'm being completely honest...make little sense to me. I think of it like a scientific hypothesis - the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. This is why I love that Color Me a Season combines Body Harmony colors with the Seasons. You can see what both cool and warm skin tones look like and what sets them apart. So if you are trying to do a DIY Color Analysis.. start with the basics. Are you yellow-based or are you blue-based? Regardless of your luminosity - the colors from your side of the color wheel/color spectrum will look better on you than colors from the opposite side of the color wheel.

I found this yarn in the strip as my skin tone harmony color, just slightly deeper and the trim matches highlights in my hair. I like the color harmony here. Crochet is thick and better for Square Body Types, but I love to crochet so I have softened it with scalloped detail and the rosebud. I also kept my keysize in mind when choosing the pattern and details. I love it! It feels "very me". π
Knowing your Body Harmony Colors helps your wardrobe feel customized to you, which is why I love Color Me a Season. It combines harmony colors with Seasonal Color Analysis. The eye loves to see repetition in both color and lines.

Boot styles for each type π
π΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈπ΅οΈ
1. Triangle - like with the shoes, angular, animated and unusual lines for boots are best for those with triangle body type. Decorated boots and multi-colored. Textured leather - patent, lizard, snake and alligator patterns.
2. Square - casual and practical. Natural earthy leathers for boots. Straps, top-stitching, buckles, button-downs, fringes, flaps, two-tone colors are all great for square body types.
3. Circle - always feminine and delicate. This can be a little harder when it comes to cold weather clothing, but still doable. The round toe boots with a little ruffle detail is a good example, if the heel was curved.. even better! Patent and soft kid leather, microsuede all great for circle body types. Even dainty bow details would be beautiful.
4. Oval - classic lines with little to no detail are best. Cone heels that are balanced. Smooth lines and fine quality. Timeless boots. No extreme lines.
What kind of boots are your favorite? Let me know in the comments!
