Something fun for soapers!

I was going through some of my old soap pictures and came across these from 2008. I completely forgot I made these. The mold was from a chocolate makers store and I thought these boxes would work well for soap.

I remember they were very work intensive and only made a few. They were nice for holding bath salt.

Yes. If I don’t get enough protein I feel tired quickly. Good advise!

We’ve all heard we need to eat more protein. It helps keep us fueled for the day, helps maintain healthy muscles, proteins are the building blocks for our hair, skin and nails too! Sometimes it can be harder to get it all in because our meals tend to be focused around carbohydrates. So here are some ways to boost your protein intake throughout the day!

1. Going for a savoury breakfast rather than a sweeter option makes it a lot easier to choose foods that are higher in protein. It doesn’t just have to mean eggs either! Beans on toast, chickpea “omelette”, homemade breakfast sausage are all great additions for a filling first meal of the day.

2. Nuts and seeds can be used in so many ways to oomph up meals and snacks. If you do go the sweet route with breakfast, be sure to top your oats or pancakes with some h**p hearts or nut butter. Sprinkle some chia seeds on your toast with seed butter and jam. Add pumpkin seeds or almonds to salads for a little crunch. Mix in some tahini to your sauces or dressings. Throw in some cashews next time you’re making a stir fry.

3. Eating a variety of different foods at meals is a great way to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need. You might not think it but vegetables actually have protein too! Making sure you have a mix of leafy greens or root vegetables will provide you with some protein to go along with your main source. One of my favourite veggies to add in for a little boost are peas! Have them on the side with carrots, add them to stir fries, curries, rice dishes, casseroles, they’re so versatile!

4. Once cooked, beans and legumes can be eaten hot or cold so they make great additions to salads, chilies, baked goods. I like adding lentils to tomato based pasta sauce, red ones cook quickly and blend right in! Black bean brownies are also a sneaky way to get in more nutrients!

5. Next time you’re making a side to go with dinner, reach for the quinoa instead of white rice. Quinoa is one of the few complete vegan proteins, meaning it has all the essential amino acids we need. For pastas, there are so many different options out there now, chickpea, lentil, quinoa and corn. Try using one of those for your next pasta night for an extra boost of protein.

What’s your favourite way to boost protein?

I love using a combination of coconut and olive oil as a base for soap making as it gives you the best of both worlds, the cleansing properties of coconut with the moisturizing effects of the olive is the perfect balance! Sometimes though, you want a little something extra in your bar.
Adding other oils to your soap is sometimes known as a superfat, or as I like to call it, your special oil. Adding this extra bit of oil ensures all the lye is bound so you haven’t overalkalized your soap and adds a moisturizing component to your bar!
Here are some of my favourite oils to add and why!
Sweet almond oil is filled with vitamin E to protect your skin, keeps skin pH at a normal level and is great for dry to normal skin.
Avocado oil is rich, heavy and moisturizing.
Rice bran oil is great for severely dry skin, full of vitamin E and antioxidants, and is the perfect oil for sensitive or tired skin. Also a wonderful nut-free choice!
Macadamia nut oil is great for all skin types, hydrating and soothing, full of vitamin E. When compared to other nut oils, macadamia is lighter than almond and is quickly absorbed.
Castor oil is thick and rich and adds a nice creamy bubble to soap.
