At the end of the day knowing anyone likes a haircut you did enough to take a picture of it to their stylist is an ENORMOUS compliment and feels great. I always want that part of this, there is not better acknowledgement I can receive of my effort then a stranger being like- yeah put that on my head 🤌✨️

However hairdressing can be art and I know fine art artists talk about how it feels when their work gets referenced or straight up copied and how icky and unprofessional that can feel and in their industry be. We are different, hairdressing would have an abrupt death without us freely sharing knowledge and inspo amongst eachother- but sometimes it sucks seeing your work go through someone else's filter 🤷‍♀️

So I don't feel like that big of freak for flagging this as a problem that doesn't really have a solution but maybe it would be cathartic for us to acknowledge as an industry having people copy us doesn't always feel good sometimes it just feels draining and unfair and succcccccks.

The call is truly coming from within the house... aka industry.

There is such a mindset of how little can I make it by on in our industry and then you pair that with people who work as stylists for ✨️fun✨️, who through circumstances of birth or marriage have the privilege of not needing an actual income and suddenly the value is completely obscured. How do we expect consumers to understand that Becky with the engineer spouse can afford to work for next to nothing and that's why her prices have stayed low for 20 years, or that Mary a stylist of 40+ years still charges what she did in the 00s because for the first 20 years of her career that WAS a rate that could buy a house and generate savings and now that she's set up she doesn't 'worry' about money anymore.

I don't think that under capitialism you can put a cap on pricing in any industry but there should be a universal minimum, a way of creating a unified sense of value for all of us and base line protections for hairstylist starting out in this industry. 😮‍💨

Undercuts are such a loaded choice for thick coarser hair types and I really want to break down why.

When you possess thick, coarser ,wavy/curly hair types a large part of you hair's behavior is that it swallows air, which is how you get all that amazing volume. Undercuts create a big blocky spot of even more air to sit in your hair causing it to float and bumble around with no control.

That lack of control is just fine as long as you want heavy long layers, but if you want to air dry say a s**gcut, bixie, or other layered cuts the weight that helps waves and curls create tendrils instead of Christmas tree 🎄 layers is quite literally not there anymore and you aren't going to get what your looking for without heat tools and a looooot of product.

So I do reject people who have large undercuts pretty frequently, because presumably you want what I excel in- air dry friendly textured soft layered cuts and it quite literally cannot be done if we're missing the interior of your hair.

In the end, always do you, but do it informed!

People radically over complicate the process of deciding whether a new look or haircut will suit them, let's try and fix that:

The easiest way to trouble shoot that question is a universal design principal- where the line stops, everyone looks.

I suggest breaking down where you want the lines in your haircut to end based off of what you LIKE about your face/body but the reverse works too!

So take a breath the next time your agonizing over new bangs, different layers etc and ask yourself where the haircut will point 👉 and whether or not YOU want that part of yourself showcased 💃
