【箫Xiao】《良宵引》君子如玉,箫声如诉 | 夏日消暑必备Listening to a calming Chinese bamboo flute 05/01/2024

The Tao can be understood as the way of the universe. Taoism believes that all living creatures ought to live in harmony with the universe, and the energy found in it. Ch'i, or qi, is the energy present guiding everything in the universe.

"Xiao" 箫, a traditional Chinese music instrument, has a quality of "void" and "empty", the sound quality is consistent with the ancient Taoism philosophy, the great Dao - the Law of Nature.

In Chinese, to describe a nice suave man, they say 君子如玉, "a gentle man like a precious jade".

Psalms 139: 9-18

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

For thou hast formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; in thy book written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

Art is Faith toward Life 02/07/2021

Art is an experience to “taste”--

We use the word “taste” when we say someone who has a certain way of relating to art, e.g. someone has a good taste. It is the same word in French or in Chinese, perhaps in other languages too. We appreciate visual beauty with our eyes and music with our ears, why do we borrow a word from another sense?

I think it is because that food is so essential to our life and survival, over the long human history, we started to have better and more delicious food. We love food so much with this deep appreciation and gratitude for its life sustaining quality. The act of consuming food is a bodily and visceral experience.

At the same time, I believe art is as essential to our life and survival as food. When we eat, the delicious flavors we taste in our mouth, the warmth, refresh-ness and comfort we feel in our body all make it a pleasant, wholesome and life giving experience. Appreciation for art and beauty is linked to this visceral need and experience, it is not limited to the flavor we feel in our mouth but an overall feeling and comprehensive evaluation to something much deeper to our well-being.

The universe is grand. Life is grander. 12/31/2020

"from time to time, I would gaze up at the stars after the night shift and think that they looked like a glowing desert, and I myself was a poor child abandoned in the desert… I thought that life was truly an accident among accidents in the universe. The universe was an empty palace, and humankind a small ant in the entire palace."

Art is the inevitable consequence of growth… 12/23/2020

“Art is the inevitable consequence of growth and is the manifestation of the principles of its origin.

The work of art is a result; is the output of a progress in development and stands as a record and marks the degree of development...

Art appears in many forms. To some degree every human being is an artist, dependent on the quality of his growth. Art need not be intended. "

The Development of the Art Spirit 12/11/2020

The question of development of the art spirit in all walks of life interests me. I mean by this, the development of individual judgment and taste, the love of work for the sake of doing things well, tendency toward simplicity and order.

If anything can be done to bring the public to a greater consciousness of the relation between art and life, of the part each person plays by exercising and developing his own personal taste and judgment and not depending on outside “authority,” it would be well.

Moreover, if the buyers of pictures could be brought to believe that, whatever may be their interest in accredited old masters, they have, equally with the artists, their part to play in the development and the progress of art in our own time and place — that they, too, should enter the struggle for today’s expression, lending a full support by purchasing the works of the strugglers and searchers of our day and risking many mistakes in their purchases, just as the artists are risking many mistakes in their efforts—it would be of public benefit. – The Art Spirit, by Robert Henry
