Why are your socks more regulated than your tampons? 🧦

While clothing labels must provide a percentage breakdown of every single fabric used, period products aren’t legally required to print a single ingredient on the box.

It’s a bizarre regulatory loophole: In the EU, textiles are strictly monitored for chemicals and plastics.

But many menstrual products, which sit against the body’s most absorbent skin, are regulated under the GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) as ‚general consumer goods.‘

Unlike other brands, Mondays is fully transparent about where our products are made and what’s in them.

The reality of standard period products is eye-opening:
🩸 Pads: The average conventional pad contains up to 90% plastic, and some don’t contain any cotton at all.
🧵 Tampons: Most are wrapped in a synthetic fiber overwrap (like polyester) to prevent shedding.
☁️ Cotton: If it’s not organic, it can be grown and processed using harsh fertilizers and chemical bleaches.

It’s time for full ingredient transparency. New 2026 EU updates to REACH are tightening the screws on ‚forever chemicals‘ (PFAS) and microplastics in hygiene articles, phasing out dangerous synthetic polymers and changing the industry.

As we continue Menstrual Health Awareness Month, this week we are diving into a frustrating reality: The Diagnosis Gap.

In the EU, women with menstrual conditions like endometriosis still wait an average of 10 years for a formal diagnosis. That is a decade of dismissed pain, medical gaslighting, and missed opportunities.

The tide is gradually turning.

🛡️ We are seeing shifts in how menstrual health is treated at a policy level. The EU SHIELD initiative is now actively pushing for gender-sensitive medical research. This is a critical step toward closing the diagnosis gap by ensuring medical protocols are designed specifically with women, and with menstruation, in mind.

🇪🇸 Spain also recently made history by becoming the first European country to implement national paid menstrual leave, recognizing that menstrual health is health.

By advocating for better research, we can ensure the next generation doesn’t have to wait a decade to be heard.

🇪🇺 The European Commission is putting menstrual health on the map 📢

The Gender Equality Strategy 2026-2030 officially acknowledges menstruation not just as a „private matter“, but as a systemic barrier to equality. ⚖️

By prioritizing menstrual and menopause poverty, the EU is finally tackling the structural gaps that create an uneven playing field for women’s careers and economic stability.

The report also moves beyond the gender pay gap to address modern hurdles like digital violence, AI-related risks, and the critical lack of gender-sensitive medical research.

It’s a long-overdue roadmap for policy that reflects reality for women in the EU, and around the world. 🌍

Period poverty isn’t „somewhere else.“ It’s happening right here in the EU.📍

🩸 10% of the menstruating population in the EU cannot afford or access basic period products - that’s around 11 million people.
🩸 42% of those already struggling report having to choose between buying an everyday essential item, like food, or period products.

This is more than a financial burden - it’s a health and dignity crisis. To get by, many are forced to use products longer than the recommended time, or rely on makeshift alternatives. 🧻

This can lead to increased risk of infection, TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), and other menstrual health issues.

There is progress on the horizon. Under the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2026-2030, the European Commission is finally treating „period and menopause poverty“ as a systemic issue, advocating for free period product access in public buildings and workplaces.

Local roots, nationwide impact. 🇨🇭 ✨

At Organic Mondays, we believe business should be a force for good. As partners of 1% for the Planet, we’re proud to be part of a global movement committed to positive change, starting right here at home.

Last year, we donated over 3,000 pads to Zharity, marking their first-ever donation received through the 1% For The Planet program.

Through Zharity’s extensive network of over 50 local partner organisations, we are able to deliver organic, essential period care directly to those who need it most.

We’re honoured to be a small part of this wider network of change and to see the tangible impact of local-to-local support.

Open conversations create better workplaces.

Interclean Amsterdam was four days of energising conversations, thoughtful questions, and a genuinely warm Dutch welcome 🌷. The atmosphere was open, easy-going and direct - exactly the kind of setting where meaningful topics can be discussed honestly and great business relationships are built.

Menstruation in the workplace still felt unfamiliar or even taboo for many visitors. The contrast says a lot: there is real curiosity, but also a clear need to keep normalising the topic in professional spaces.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us. The dialogue matters, now it’s time to put the words into action!
