What Is an Eyeshadow?
Eyeshadows were invented by Max Factor in 1915 to create depth and definition for the eye. He was inspired by the Greek theater, where actors would paint their faces white with lead-based makeup before applying black kohl around their eyes to make them look more significant and more dramatic.

Today, we still use many of these same techniques — only now we’re using much safer ingredients!

What Are Eyeshadows Made Of?
The main ingredient in eyeshadow is usually talc or mica, which gives it its smooth texture and shine. Some brands may add titanium dioxide or zinc oxide to make them more opaque and reflective, while others may add bismuth oxychloride for color-shifting effects. A lot of brands also use preservatives like parabens or formaldehyde to prevent bacteria growth due to prolonged use.

Your makeup brushes are great at retaining product, but they also cling to bacteria, grime, oils, and product buildup that, if not removed thoroughly, can be transmitted back onto your skin.
