A parent's worst nightmare: trying to help, and losing everything.

In August 2006, 17-year-old Liam Ashley from Auckland, New Zealand, took his mother's car without permission. Like many teenagers, he was struggling with ADHD and making impulsive decisions.

His parents, Ian and Lorraine Ashley, wanted to teach him accountability. They pressed charges and refused bail, believing a brief time in custody would be the wake-up call he needed. They trusted the system would keep their son safe while teaching him a lesson about consequences.

On August 24, 2006, Liam was placed in a prison transport van with adult offenders. One of them was George Charlie Baker, a 25-year-old with a history of serious offenses. Despite clear regulations requiring minors to be kept separate from adults, Liam was placed in the same compartment as Baker.

During the journey to Auckland Central Remand Prison, Baker became aggressive. By the time guards intervened, Liam had sustained fatal injuries. He passed away the next day, August 25, 2006.

An official investigation later determined his passing was entirely preventable. Liam had been flagged as high-risk and vulnerable, but that information was never properly communicated to the transport company. Baker's full history wasn't disclosed either.

Baker was sentenced to life imprisonment. The case exposed catastrophic failures in New Zealand's justice system and led to widespread calls for reform.

Years later, Liam's parents shared their story. The guilt never left them. "It's harder forgiving yourself than forgiving someone else," his mother said. In 2015, they said they had even forgiven Baker.

They made a decision trying to help their son. The system failed to protect him.

Sometimes the lesson isn't the one anyone expected to learn.

EFCC Arrests Herbalists with $3.4million, €280, 000 Counterfeit Notes in Osun, Lagos

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have uncovered huge counterfeit foreign notes to the tune of $3, 430, 000 (Three Million, Four Hundred and Thirty Thousand United States Dollars) and €280, 000 (Two Hundred and Eighty Thousand Euros) in possession of a five-member syndicate arrested for allegedly swindling one Halima Sanni the sum of N26, 550, 000 (Twenty-Six Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira).

The herbalists: Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan (female) and Familola Sunday Olaitan. were arrested on December 7 and 8, 2025 at their shrines in Osun and Lagos States respectively, following a thorough surveillance and intelligence on their fraudulent activities

Investigation revealed that the suspects were allegedly defrauding unsuspecting individuals of their legitimate earnings under the pretence of providing spiritual cleansing and solutions to different ailments.

They also allegedly assured their victims of their powers to conjure several currency notes which must be cleaned up by a genie through spiritual sacrifice before spending the money. They did all these by hypnotizing their victims to provide money for the sacrifice.

Other items recovered from them include two exotic cars and mobile phones.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
