With the hot sun and a windy shoreline, managing your hair isn't easy but braiding your hair is just one way of keeping hair out of your face, and your neck cool. You could take things up a notch by French braiding or what about a half bun - it is all the rage right now and if you use a curling wand, give yourself messy waves and pull back the top half of your hair into a topknot. June is here and along with the sunny Barcelona weather, we have humidity, beach days and salty seas to contend with. Below are some tips for avoiding damaging your hair in the summer months ....

1. Caring for your hair by brushing it properly stops snags, knots and split ends. DON'T brush when wet without using a good conditioner or hair detangle spray, which will help your brush glide through your hair without causing breakage. And avoid over drying - leaving hair a little damp will protect the hair shaft.
2. Avoid hairstyles that can pull on your hair strands - high ponytails or tight plaits. These styles can weaken the hair, causing it to break. If impossible, tie in looser styles such as a lower ponytail. Preferably, wear your hair down.
3. Get your hair cut regularly! Trimming your hair gets rid of split ends and avoids damage creeping further up the hair.
4. During the hotter months give your hair a break from over colouring - this will give it time to recover, but if unavoidable try to stay within a few shades of the original colour. Going too light will over-process your hair causing dryness and breakage. I am always available for a colour consultation and advice on Redken products.
5. Use the right hair accessories - reach for anything fabric. Try to avoid clips that have metal or sharp edges.
6. Of course, you can always cover your hair from the intense sun and damaging conditions by using a hat or silk scarf - this will help keep moisture in.
