ST. ROSE

Our hearts ache and to our amazing community around the world please know this universe of art, beauty, nature, escapism, fragrance, remembrance … is a safe place for all.

I am an immigrant. My parents moved to the United States from Australia when I was 6 years old. My skin white, my hair blonde, my language English but my first grade teacher sent me to the speech therapist while the other kids played to get rid of my un-American accent. I remember running in the yard while my dad worked in the garden and when a man walking his dog strolled past my dad gave a neighborly “g’day” only to be yelled at to “stop stealing our jobs.” I remember going to the grocery store with my mum where she was harassed at the checkout for having an accent.

These moments (obviously) left a mark in my heart but again my skin is white, my hair is blonde, my language is English … and now thanks to that speech pathologist my accent is even American. Yet I still don’t feel like I belong. I think all the time how many more instances of in-acceptance for being a foreigner would have happened if I had dark skin. Or if we were here under a circumstance like seeking asylum. Can you imagine that? What a privilege it is to not have to contemplate running to the unknown out of fear.

Every human deserves dignity and respect.

Don’t get political they say. You are a female founder who is seeking investors in a world where Women-founded startups consistently receive only about 2% of global venture capital funding. You have to the play the game. Eff the game. I am also a mother and my children will never have to question what side I am on.

I started this brand to make a difference. To protect the earth while making something better, more pure, more intentional, a return to an older way that resonated and lasted … and as always for all humankind. Then I had Jack and after, Isabelle. Now it’s also for them. It’s about a future that honors the planet and all who walk it.

At SR we are architects for a more beautiful world to come. And I think that’s worth risking everything for.
