There have been significant protests and widespread opposition in the UK regarding proposed mandatory digital IDs, with thousands marching in London. A petition against the plans, which were intended to be mandatory for employment to tackle immigration, garnered nearly 3 million signatures. Concerns include state surveillance and data privacy risks.

Key Aspects of the Protests:

Mass Protests: Thousands marched in London in October 2025 to oppose the plans.

Huge Petition: A petition against mandatory digital IDs amassed nearly 3 million signatures, forcing a parliamentary debate.

Opposition Groups: Organizations like Big Brother Watch are campaigning against the proposal, calling it a "No2DigitalID" movement.

Core Concerns: Critics argue the plans constitute surveillance, threaten civil liberties, and risk creating a "papers please" society.

Government Response:
Following the massive backlash, the government indicated a U-turn in early 2026, dropping plans to make digital IDs mandatory for working in the UK

The UK government proposed making a new digital ID system mandatory for workers to prove their right to work by 2029. Following significant backlash regarding privacy and accessibility, the government U-turned in January 2026 and dropped plans for the, often called, "Brit Card" to be compulsory.

Original Plan (Sept 2025): The government announced a digital ID, stored on smartphones, would be required to start a new job or rent a home, aimed at reducing illegal working.

The Reversal (Jan 2026): After resistance from campaigners, businesses, and some MPs, the government announced digital IDs will now be voluntary.

Alternative Checks: While the compulsory card was scrapped, the government still intends to make digital "right-to-work" checks mandatory by 2029, allowing people to use alternatives like biometrics or e-visas, rather than a single mandatory digital ID card.

The initial mandatory proposal was seen as a major, yet highly controversial, step to enhance border control and curb illegal employment. 02/05/2026
