You think your feet are ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐

Every single client thinks that. Before they walk through my door, they send the same message. It sounds something like this:

You sit down. I ask you a few questions โ about your health, your history, what's been bothering you and for how long. There is no judgement in any of those questions. There is no moment where I react. There is no sharp intake of breath.
There is just someone who has spent years training to understand exactly what you're showing them, and who genuinely wants to help you walk without pain.
Before: a client who came in after three years of managing an ingrown nail herself โ cutting it, digging it, hoping it would sort itself out. She apologised before she'd even taken her sock off. She told me she'd almost cancelled four times.
After: forty-five minutes later, she said โ and I remember this exactly โ "I can't believe I waited three years for this."
That's the appointment you're putting off.
So here's what I want you to do: ๐ not book immediately, if you're not ready. Not push past something that genuinely feels difficult. Just โ โ๏ธ stop punishing yourself for having a foot problem.
Feet are personal, and plenty of people feel awkward about showing them to a clinician. But life happens. Starting now is what matters.
When you're ready, I'm here.

๐๐ก๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ... despite the fact that you've been soaking them for months
You've been doing the kind thing. Every evening, a bowl of warm water. Maybe some Epsom salts. Perhaps a few drops of something that smells like a spa. You sit, you soak, you feel the relief of it โ that immediate softening, the tension releasing, the dry skin seeming to yield.
And then the next morning, your heels are cracked again.
So you soak again. And they get worse.
You are not imagining it. And you are not doing something wrong.
You are doing something completely logical that happens, at the biological level, to produce the opposite of what you intend.
Here's what's actually happening โ and why the solution is simpler, and more counterintuitive than you'd expect.
It borrows from it.
When you submerge your feet in water, the skin cells absorb it temporarily. They swell slightly. They feel softer, more pliable, more alive. This is real โ you're not imagining the relief.
But the moment you lift your feet out of the water and the evaporation begins, something less visible happens.
It takes your skin's natural moisture with it โ the lipids, the natural moisturising factors, the components of what scientists call the skin barrier that were there before you started soaking. The process has a name: ๐ก๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ค๐๐ก๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ . And in skin that is already dry and compromised, it doesn't restore anything. It depletes further.
Think of your skin as a sponge - one that is kept consistently damp โ protected, sealed, never allowed to fully dry out โ remains soft, flexible, functional. It does what a sponge is supposed to do.
But take that same sponge. Soak it completely in water. Then leave it on the counter to air-dry.
What happens?
It becomes brittle. It stiffens. It cracks at the edges where the drying happens fastest and most completely.
This is your heel after daily soaking. Because you've been doing the one thing that feels most logical and most immediate โ adding water to something dry โ without knowing that the water leaves faster than it arrived, and takes something with it on the way out.
You are not failing to solve the problem.
You are, with complete sincerity and good intention, making it slightly worse each time.
This is important to understand โ not because it means you've been doing something foolish, but because understanding the mechanism is the only way to break the cycle.
The goal is not to add water to dry skin. The goal is to stop the skin losing what moisture it already has.
This is the difference between a bucket with a hole in it and a sealed container. Pouring more water into the leaking bucket doesn't solve the problem. Fixing the hole does.
The professional approach uses what are called occlusive moisturisers โ ingredients that sit on the surface of the skin and create a seal, trapping the existing moisture beneath them rather than introducing water that will simply evaporate.
Ingredients like urea โ which sounds less glamorous than it is โ at concentrations of 20 to 40% actively break down the hardened, thickened skin of cracked heels while simultaneously drawing moisture into the deeper layers and holding it there.
Ingredients like shea butter, lanolin, and certain silicones that form a physical barrier โ the equivalent of patching the hole in the bucket before you worry about the water level.
This is what professional treatment does that daily soaking cannot.
It doesn't add. It repairs and retains.
Water dries skin when it evaporates. Daily soaking creates a dehydration cycle, not a hydration one. Cracked heels need barrier repair, not more water. Professional treatment removes what blocks the repair and seals what was leaking.
Your feet are not dry because you haven't soaked them enough.
They may be dry, in part, because you have.
Come in for a proper assessment. We'll look at what's actually happening with your skin barrier, address the build-up that's preventing home care from working, and put together a realistic routine that solves the problem rather than cycling through it.
One appointment often does more than months of the wrong approach.

I smiled. I โreadโ them - NOT the way a fortune teller reads a palm.
The way a mechanic reads an engine before deciding what's wrong โ systematically, carefully, with a checklist that doesn't skip steps.
I've been reading Neale's
๐จ๐๐๐๐ โ the 9th edition, published by Elsevier, written by a team of podiatric clinicians and used in every podiatry university in the UK.
It's not light bedside reading. It's the clinical reference that sits on the desk of every serious foot health professional in this country.
One principle in it stopped me in my tracks - because it put into words something I've always done instinctively: ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐. ๐จ๐๐๐๐๐. ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐.
๐๐๐ซ๐'๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ฆ๐๐๐ง๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ โ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ฒ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ: when you bring your car to a good mechanic, they don't start replacing parts the moment you describe a noise. They plug in the diagnostic tool first. They check the whole system. They find out what's actually happening under the bonnet before touching anything.
Most salons work ๐ the other way around: you sit down, they pick up the file, and they start.
No questions about your circulation.
No check on your sensation.
No note taken of your medications or your medical history.
Just โ straight in. It is โ๏ธ not fine when something else is going on.
Before I treat any new client, I run through a It takes about ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐ฌ.
โ
I check circulation โ because poor blood flow changes everything about how I work on your feet, and skipping this step in the wrong patient can cause real harm.
โ
I check sensation โ because a foot that can't feel pressure properly is a foot that needs a completely different approach.
โ
I look at the skin and nails not just for what needs treating, but for what they're telling me about the rest of your body.
Your feet are extraordinarily good at telling the truth:
๐ swollen ankles can signal heart or kidney problems;
๐ dry, cracked skin in specific patterns can indicate thyroid issues; ๐ nail changes that look purely cosmetic can be early signs of fungal infection, psoriasis, or circulatory disease;
๐ a callus in the wrong place on a diabetic foot isn't just uncomfortable โ left unmanaged, it's a wound waiting to happen.
None of this is visible to someone who isn't trained to look for it.
Think of it this way: a coat of paint on a wall looks the same whether the wall behind it is solid brick or crumbling plaster. You only find out the difference when you know to look โ and when you know what you're looking at.

A cosmetic pedicurist is trained to make your feet look good. That's a legitimate, valuable skill for healthy feet.
A foot health practitioner is trained to understand what your feet are telling them โ and to act on it safely, clinically, and with your full medical picture in mind.
Same room. Same chair. Completely different level of care.

Most people come to Pedicure Studio by Alexandra Martin after months of trying things that didn't work:
โช๏ธ Pharmacy creams
Home remedies
Regular nail salons.
By the time they arrive, the problem has usually gotten worse - because what they needed was real foot health care expertise, not cosmetic care.
There's a difference - a significant one. And understanding it could save you ๐ months of discomfort, ๐ repeated treatments that don't hold, and in some cases, ๐ far more serious consequences.

A beauty nail artist typically holds a Level 2 qualification โ a course that focuses on cosmetic appearance: shaping, polishing, softening skin, and making feet look their best. That's exactly what it's designed for, and there's nothing wrong with it for healthy feet.
A Foot Health Practitioner usually holds a Level 4 Diploma on the Regulated Qualifications Framework โ the same framework used for healthcare professionals.
The curriculum covers
โช๏ธ human anatomy and physiology,
โช๏ธ circulatory and nervous system disorders,
โช๏ธ skin and nail pathology,
โช๏ธ diabetic foot assessment,
โช๏ธ peripheral vascular disease,
โช๏ธ infection control, and
โช๏ธ clinical scalpel techniques.
Practical training takes place under the direct supervision of HCPC-registered podiatrists, working with real patients presenting real clinical conditions.
Put simply: a beauty nail artist is trained to make your feet look good. A Foot Health Practitioner is ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฆ๐๐ค๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ โ and to recognise when something is medically significant.
These are not the same thing. And for a growing number of people, confusing the two has real consequences.
Pain is not a cosmetic issue. It is your body signalling that something structural or pathological is wrong.
Research published in ๐โ๐ ๐ฝ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ ๐
โ๐๐ข๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐ด๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ estimates that mechanical foot pain affects approximately ๐๐% ๐จ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ ๐๐, with around 10% reporting pain significant enough to impact their daily activities.
Yet the majority never seek clinical assessment โ they simply adapt: wearing wider shoes, avoiding walks, limiting activity.
A Foot Health Practitioner can assess the cause: is it
๐ pressure from a corn or callus building on a bony prominence? ๐ an ingrown nail creating soft tissue inflammation?
๐ a structural issue with the way weight is distributed across the foot?
Each has a different clinical solution โ and none of them is a coat of polish and a foot soak. A before/after among my clients looked exactly like this:
โช๏ธ Before: the client has come in walking with a visible limp, unable to wear her work shoes without pain. She'd been managing with thick socks and gel insoles for four months.
After: Two sessions to remove a deep plantar corn and address the surrounding callus. She returns the following week in her normal shoes, no limp, no insoles.

Ingrown toenails โ clinically known as onychocryptosis โ are one of the most common foot conditions seen in both GP surgeries and podiatry clinics across the UK.
According to data from StatPearls (NIH), prevalence is estimated at between 2.5% and 5% of the general population, and a cross-sectional survey of UK podiatrists published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research (2024) identified nail surgery as the tenth most common procedure performed by podiatrists in this country.
The reason pharmacy treatments and "cutting differently" so often fail is that ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ง๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ง๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ โ it's
the shape of the nail plate,
the anatomy of the nail fold,
the depth of the sulcus,
or a nail that has been incorrectly managed over time and now requires clinical intervention to correct the growth path.
A beauty nail technician is not trained to assess or treat onychocryptosis. A Foot Health Practitioner is.

Calluses are the body's protective response to repeated pressure or friction. They come back because the underlying cause โ a bony prominence, abnormal gait, ill-fitting footwear, or structural foot change โ hasn't been addressed.
Removing the surface skin at a beauty salon feels satisfying in the moment. But without identifying and managing the cause, the callus rebuilds itself, often harder and thicker than before. In some cases, the skin begins to fissure โ and those cracks, particularly around the heel, can become entry points for infection.
This becomes especially serious in people with diabetes.
According to NICE guidelines, โ๏ธ an estimated 10% of people with diabetes will develop a diabetic foot ulcer at some point in their lives.
๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐จ๐จ๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ precede more than 80% of diabetes-related amputations. Diabetes UK reports that diabetes causes more than 180 amputations in the UK every week โ and the NHS spends approximately ยฃ1 billion per year on diabetic foot care as a result.
Barnsley and South Yorkshire sit in areas identified by NHS data as having above-average rates of This is not a distant statistic. It is a local reality.
A Foot Health Practitioner assesses the skin condition in full clinical context โ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ โ before touching it. That distinction matters enormously.
Your feet carry your full body weight approximately 8,000 steps a day. The problems that develop on them are not always cosmetic โ and treating clinical conditions as though they are cosmetic not only fails to resolve them, it often makes them worse.
If you recognise any of the three signs above, the right first step is not another salon visit. It's an assessment with someone trained to understand what they're looking at.
Pedicure Studio by Alexandra Martin is based in Barnsley and sees clients from across South Yorkshire. If you're not sure whether what you're experiencing needs attention โ comment below or send me a message. I'll give you an honest answer.

I want to talk about something that doesn't get said enough in this industry: not about treatments, not about techniques and not about the clinical side of what happens in this studio โ though all of that matters deeply and I will never stop talking about it.
I want to talk about what it feels like when someone takes three minutes out of their day to write down what an appointment meant to them.
I read every review. Not quickly, not in passing โ properly. The way you read something that was written with intention, because it deserves the same intention in return. And what strikes me, every time, is not the praise.
It's the specificity.
I almost feel like I'm flying."
She's the only one who has consistently fixed my ingrown nails without any pain or stress."
It never feels rushed or just a service. It feels like someone looking after you."
Walking on clouds."
Like they've been reborn."
These are not generic compliments. These are people reaching for the exact words to describe something they weren't entirely expecting โ the particular quality of feeling genuinely cared for, rather than efficiently processed.
That distinction โ between care and process โ is everything to me.
.
When you write one, you are not just leaving feedback for a business.
You are telling ๐the next person โ the one who has been scrolling for twenty minutes trying to decide whether to trust someone new with something as personal as their feet โ that it's safe to take the step.
You are the voice that answers the question they're too uncertain to ask out loud.
Your words answer that. Mine can't โ not with the same weight, not with the same credibility.
Because I will always sound like someone with a reason to say good things about my own work.
You sound like someone with nothing to gain except the satisfaction of pointing someone in the right direction.
The ones who come every six weeks without fail. Who have sent their mothers, their daughters, their colleagues, their friends. Who have written reviews at eleven o'clock at night because something about the appointment stayed with them long enough to put into words.
I don't have adequate language for what your consistency means to me. It means that the standard held. That the care was real enough to come back to. That what I offer isn't something that impresses once and fades โ it's something that earns the next appointment, and the one after that, and the one after that.
That is the only measure of this work that matters to me.
Not the number of followers. Not the aesthetics of the feed.
Whether you came back.
And whether, when you did, it was still worth it.
If you've had an experience in this studio that stayed with you โ
A treatment that surprised you.
A moment where something released that had been held too long.
A morning after where the first steps felt different than they had in months.
Tell someone. Not for me โ though I won't pretend it doesn't matter. For the person who needs to hear it. The one who has been putting this off because they don't know what to expect, or because they've been treated badly before, or because they've quietly decided their feet aren't worth the bother.
Your three minutes could be the thing that changes their mind.
To everyone who has left a kind word, shared a recommendation, sent a friend, or simply come back
From the part of this work that has nothing to do with instruments or protocols or clinical outcomes. From the part that chose this because people matter.
And still believes, after all of it, that they do.

First, and most importantly: ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ง๐ค ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ for your patience. It means more than I can adequately say.
I wanted to be honest with you, because I think you deserve that more than you deserve a polished explanation.
I've had to step away for a short while to deal with some personal matters that simply couldn't wait. Anyone who has navigated something unexpected in their own life will understand that there are moments when the only responsible thing โ the only genuinely professional thing โ is to stop, attend to what needs attending to, and trust that the people in your corner will understand.
I have been away. I am not, however, ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก.
Every message that has come in during this time has been seen โ and every one of them is sitting with me, waiting for ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ rather than a hurried reply that doesn't do justice to the person who sent it.
I will respond to each of you individually, as soon as I'm back on my feet โ and I mean that in every sense of the phrase.
I will be returning to Barnsley on ๐
Appointments, responses, and the full return of everything Pedicure Studio by Alexandra Martin offers โ all of it resumes on Monday, 1st of June - properly, without corners cut.
I want to say one more thing, because it's true and because I think it's worth saying plainly: ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ค๐๐ฆ ๐๐๐๐ ๐'๐ก ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐.
You โ my clients, the people who trust me with something as personal as their health and their comfort โ have been with me throughout this time. In the quiet moments. In the reminder of why this work matters. In the knowledge that there are people waiting, patiently and generously, for me to come back.
That is not something I take lightly. It is, honestly, part of what makes coming back feel not just necessary, but meaningful.
Thank you for your grace.
Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for still being here.
I'll see you on Monday.
Warmly and with genuine gratitude โ

Not every story about a painful nail is dramatic. Some are quiet, private, and you tend to keep them to yourself โ because the idea of a highly visible treatment, with metallic wires catching the light in open-toed shoes... feels like more exposure than you want.
Or perhaps your nails are naturally thin, fine, and fragile. Youโve read about correction systems and instinctively felt that forcing a rigid, heavy wire onto a delicate structure would simply overwhelm it.
You were right. Traditional metal systems can easily over-correct or damage a fragile nail plate. And I totally understand where youศre coming from.
An elegant solution doesn't aggressively pull at the edges, but it rebalances the stress from the surface. At Pedicure Studio by Alexandra Martin, I use
This is a flexible, non-metallic, tooth-colored strip bonded directly across the nail surface with clinical precision.
Research published in the
๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ shows that composite-based corrections achieve significant clinical improvement in over 85% of casesโwith outstanding outcomes on thin nail plates where metallic systems risk causing trauma.
When you look down after the treatment, you will notice two things simultaneously:
โก๏ธ It is virtually invisible: In open shoes or on bare feet, the correction simply isn't there to be seen.
The nail feels supported: The sharp pressure that has been building up is quietly and beautifully redistributed.
Over the next 3 to 6 months, while you go about your life wearing your favorite shoes, the composite works continuously in the background.
Millimeter by millimeter, a nail that used to curl becomes
It is the definition of clinical ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐: maximum results through minimum intervention.
So... this is for you if:
๐ your nails are naturally thin, delicate, or have been over-managed in the past
๐ you want a correction system that stays completely discreet in summer shoes
๐ you prefer a gentle, non-metallic approach tailored to your lifestyle, not a rigid protocol applied uniformly.
Come in for an assessment. I will evaluate your nail's thickness and curvature, and tell you honestly if the Composite Band is the right path for you.
If it is, we can begin your treatment during the very same appointment.
