During the 19th century there was a strong belief that you could tell something about the character of an individual from their body. In 1908, this inspired Austrian cultural commentator Adolf Loos to state: “People with tattoos who are not in prison are either latent criminals or degenerate aristocrats. Know where the word 'tattoo' originally came from? 🤔
It's a relatively recent introduction into the English language, a legacy of the voyages of Captain James Cook to the Pacific Islands in the late 18th Century ⛵️
Until Cook's voyage to Tahiti in 1769, the practice of skin art had been referred to as pricking, marking or staining & although the term 'tattoo' had existed since the late 1600s, 'beating a tattoo' referred to a drumbeat 🥁
But during Cook's voyage he recorded the word 'tatau' from the Tahitians and eventually the word became Anglicised as ‘tattoo’. So now you know 💉
