Professor Christian Aldridge is a Consultant Dermatologist in CwmTaf Morganwwg NHS Trust.

He is the Course Director and Programme Lead for the Dermatology Diploma-MSc with the University of South Wales and The University of Buckingham Medical School.

He has previously been the Chair of the National Specialist Advisory Group for Skin Cancer in Wales, a Visiting Consultant for the Gibraltar Health Authority and a Dermatology Advisor to Melanoma UK.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK & Ireland. Skin Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder to check your skin regularly and recognise the early signs of skin cancer.

The three main types of skin cancer include:

• Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – The most common type of skin cancer. Often appears as a pearly bump, shiny patch, or sore that does not heal.

• Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – Typically presents as a red, scaly, crusted, or tender lesion that may grow over time.

• Melanoma – The most serious form of skin cancer and can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new lesion.

Remember the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma:

• A – Asymmetry
• B – Border irregularity
• C – Colour variation
• D – Diameter larger than 5mm
• E – Evolving or changing appearance

If you notice any suspicious changes to your skin, seek professional assessment as early as possible.
