Long before the Crone became a Halloween mask, she was the woman people went to when the world no longer made sense.

She was the bone-reader, the herb-woman, the dream-interpreter, the midwife, the mourner, the one who knew which plants healed and which plants killed. She had seen births, deaths, betrayals, wars, storms, and omens. She had watched enough human behaviour to recognise patterns others were too young, too proud, or too afraid to see.

That is why the Crone became linked with prophecy.

In mythology and folklore, the old woman often appears at the edge of the story. She waits beside the road. She sits by the hearth. She stands at the crossroads. She appears in forests, caves, temples, graveyards, and doorways, always close to a threshold. She is not usually the beautiful maiden chosen by kings or the fertile mother praised by society. She is the one who has survived past usefulness in the eyes of the world, and that makes her dangerous.

The Sibyls of the ancient world spoke visions that rulers feared. The Norns in Norse mythology shaped fate beneath the roots of Yggdrasil. Baba Yaga tested those who came to her hut, offering wisdom only to those brave enough to face terror. The village wise woman knew the old remedies, the old stories, the old warnings.

The Crone does not flatter.

She tells the truth underneath the truth.

She sees the wound beneath the behaviour, the ending hidden inside the beginning, the curse disguised as a blessing, and the choice a person is trying not to make.

This is why the Croneโ€™s words were often feared as curses. Not because every old woman was evil, but because truth can feel like a curse when it exposes what we wanted to keep hidden.

The Crone as Oracle reminds us that wisdom is not always soft. Sometimes it arrives with a cracked voice, sharp eyes, and a warning no one wants to hear.

She is the woman at the edge of the fire saying, โ€œI have seen this before.โ€

And when she speaks, only the foolish refuse to listen.

Deep within you resides a profound well of ancestral wisdom, a constant echo of those who came before. Listen closely each day, and you'll discern their gentle guidance, their earnest efforts to steer you toward your truest path.
They are ever watchful, their sole desire your well-being, and they endeavor to shield you by illuminating your way, guiding you towards the light. Whether you perceive it as intuition, instinct, or a powerful gut feeling, this ancient knowledge is woven into your very DNA, the genesis of your unique story. You are intrinsically connected to them on a deep, spiritual level, a profound entanglement that transcends the physical.
They are an inseparable part of you, a silent, loving presence walking beside you in spirit, forever a part of your journey ..

She didn't become distant because she stopped caring; she became distant because one day she quietly stepped back and realized the people she loved, supported, and always showed up for didn't value her with the same depth.

That realization broke something inside her. She grew tired of being the one who always reached out, always understood, and always gave more than she received.

So she stopped forcing connections, stopped expecting people to love her the way she loved them, and chose to protect her peace instead. What others see as distance is simply the silence that follows a heart that finally learned its worth.

The summer solstice arrives tomorrow at 3:24 AM CST. After that, the days start getting shorter. We won't notice for weeks, but the plants already know.

A few herbs traditionally associated with the sun and the solstice:

- St. John's Wort blooms right around the solstice, almost to the day. Traditionally harvested on St. John's Day, or Midsummer's Day, when the flowers are open and the oil in the buds runs red-gold.

- Calendula opens with the morning sun and closes at dusk, every single day.

- Chamomile blooms, emulating the sun with its golden center and ray-like petals

- Elderflower is at or just past peak right now. If you have access to it, this weekend is the time.

- Mullein sends up its flower spike right about now and will stand all summer.

- Yarrow is coming into bloom and will stay through the heat.

- Rosemary, Lavender, and Thyme are all at their aromatic peak in summer heat.

What's blooming where you are?
