Depression- A visualisation
For my FMP (Final Major Project) at college, during my UAL: Level 3 Extended Diploma in Produxtion Arts Makeup, I decided I wanted to create a powerful editorial image series based around an important topic. After lots of consideration I decided creating these image based around something that means a lot to me would allow me to portray a powerful, deeper meaning within my work. Therefore I chose to base the series around the struggles of Mental Health disorders, Specifically disorders I myself struggle with. I wanted to use this series as a way to depict how these disorders have made me feel, and how I think they may appear if they were to be human.
This look was based on Depression, and how I feel this disorder would look if it was to become human. Depression is a disorder that causes an extreme low mood, that can last from weeks, to months, and can have a huge impact on one’s daily life. I tried to resemble the side effects of this disorder within my work by using dark and light tones to create a contrast that would shed light on the “ups and downs” that can be caused when suffering from such conditions. I also used costume and hair to build upon the idea of the physical pain, and “weight on one’s shoulders” that may be felt when suffering from depressive episodes.

I am aware not everyone who struggles with these disorders has the same experience, but wanted to bring awareness, and attempt to help break the stigmas around an extremely important topic, by sharing my personal experiences through my form of expression, my creative makeup work.
