A toenail fungal infection happens when fungus gets under the nail and begins to grow.
Over time, it can cause the nail to change color, shape, and thickness.

Overgrown nails with fungal infection

Overgrown nail can be caused by aging, fungal infections, psoriasis, or pressure from tight shoes. They are often thick, horn-like, and difficult to trim. Treatment ranges from regular trimming and softening nails in warm water to professional podiatry care, and in severe cases, surgery may be an option.

It is not recommended to perform nail styling with the acrylic method on toenails, as this may increase the risk of injury, including even nail plate detachment. Toenails are more exposed to pressure and friction (e.g., in footwear), and the hard acrylic material may have an adverse effect on the natural nail plate under such conditions.
