THE SUBOCCIPITAL MUSCLES: why a small area beneath the skull can affect the entire body 🧠
At the base of the skull are the two most mobile vertebrae in the body — the Atlas and Axis.
They allow the head to:
— rotate
— tilt
— maintain balance
— stabilize vision
But these movements are not controlled by the bones themselves.
They are controlled by 8 small deep suboccipital muscles.
These are some of the deepest — and most important — muscles in the body.
They support the head, control the position of the skull, and help the nervous system understand where the body is in space.
💡 Interesting fact:
the deep neck muscles are so strong that together they can withstand a load equal to 2–3 times a person’s body weight.
That’s approximately 200–300 kg of force.
This is one reason why chronic tension in this area is so difficult to release through regular massage or forceful manipulation alone.
The problem is that modern lifestyle constantly overloads these muscles:
— phone use 📱
— laptop work 💻
— chronic stress ⚡
— forward head posture
Over time, the muscles lose the ability to fully relax.
And the body begins to adapt:
— the neck becomes stiff
— mobility decreases
— pressure develops at the base of the skull
— dizziness appears
— “brain fog” develops
— eye tension increases
— the body stays in a constant stress state
Why does this happen?
Because this area is closely connected to structures involved in:
— balance
— vision
— the vagus nerve
— nervous system regulation
The suboccipital muscles are also directly connected to the membranes surrounding the brain.
Which means the issue is often not only muscular.
It becomes a nervous system issue.
In my work, I use more than massage alone.
I take a comprehensive approach involving:
— deep muscle work
— breathing
— nervous system regulation
— posture
— muscular chains throughout the body
When the body finally leaves a chronic state of tension,
the suboccipital area gradually begins to release on its own.
And with that:
breathing becomes deeper,
the mind feels clearer,
and the body feels calmer.

Bloating after meals 🤰
Mild nausea 🤢
Constant fatigue 😴
Occasional irregular or noticeable heartbeat 💓
These symptoms are usually treated separately.
But often, they share one cause.
The vagus nerve.
It runs through the neck, chest, and diaphragm,
and regulates the body’s “rest and restore” mode:
— digestion 🍽️
— heart rhythm ❤️
— overall tension levels 🧘♀️
When its function is disrupted,
the body struggles to shift from stress into recovery.
What happens:
— digestion slows → bloating 🤰
— the stomach reacts inconsistently → nausea 🤢
— recovery doesn’t fully happen → fatigue 😴
— heart rhythm becomes more sensitive 💓
Why this happens:
Tension in the neck 😬
(the nerve passes directly through this area)
Chronic stress ⚡
(the body remains in a constant state of alert)
And most importantly —
these factors reinforce each other 🔄
You rest, but don’t fully recover.
You relax, but not completely.
In my work, I address this through the body:
releasing tension in the neck,
restoring breathing patterns,
and bringing the system back into balance ⚖️
The result is not just relief,
but a sense that the body can finally exhale 🌿

Tension in the neck.
A feeling of tightness in the chest.
Discomfort between the shoulder blades,
Is one of the most common complaints I see.
And in most cases, it’s treated locally.
Focused on the back.
But the body doesn’t function in isolation.
There is a chain — as shown in the image:
neck → rib cage → diaphragm → psoas → pelvis.
When the center of this system — the diaphragm — holds chronic tension,
the entire structure begins to lose balance.
✅️The rib cage becomes less mobile.
✅️The shoulders drift forward.
✅️The neck takes on excess load.
✅️The back compensates.
That’s where the pain begins.
Working only with the symptom often brings temporary relief.
Because the underlying cause remains.
In my practice, I approach the body as an integrated system:
breath, rib mobility, deep muscular connections.
This is more precise, more refined work.
And the results feel different:
freer breathing
less internal tension
a greater sense of lightness and structural support
If you’re looking not for short-term relief,
but for a lasting, systemic change —
