Let your journey to self care start here... (I’ve had my own caesarean scar treated, and I couldn’t believe the positive difference afterwards.)

I’ve always had an interest in complementary and holistic therapies, and after our daughter was born a few years ago, I decided it was time to make a change and try something new! I trained at the School of Bodywork in Exeter, and graduated with distinctions in Swedish Massage, Anatomy & Physiology, and Massage Theory. Soon after, I completed an additional course in Scar Tissue Release, and I cont

Sometimes some blue sky and trees are all you need... 🌳

📅 Today is the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, and the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) chose 'Action' as the theme this year because, "...while awareness is vital, real change comes when we take action too."

📋 There are suggestions of actions you might take to benefit your mental health on the MHF website - nothing fancy or big - just simple things like being in nature, getting good sleep, or talking to a friend.

💆🏻‍♀️ Of course, if I was to add one to the list, it would be for you to book a massage... 😉 (Which follows on nicely from my last post, so if you missed it - have a quick scroll and take a look!)

💜 What action have you taken for your mental health today?

You can find out more about taking action for yourself and for others using the link in the comments. 👇🏼

And I could have made this list a LOT longer!

If you have an injury or pain somewhere you might think, 'This hurts. I'll get a massage.'

But how many people would think, 'I'm having trouble sleeping/my stress levels are really high/I can't shift this headache/life is really overwhelming right now. I'll go and have a massage.'?

Massage is still so often considered a way to only help with pain - but what about all the other benefits that go with it?

It is so valuable for so many physical and mental aspects of our wellbeing, and clients who come to me with one problem, often end up finding relief from other issues too!

What does your body need support with?

Just pop me a message to try it for yourself!

It feels important because it is important...

This is something I've heard more than once from clients who've had their c-section scars treated. Those scars are a part of you now, and they shouldn't be ignored...

It's the last day of International Caesarean Awareness Month, and you've heard me share me my story, and talk about why it's a good idea to treat your scar, but what does it actually involve?

📋 Like all treatments, we start with a consultation. Getting lots of information about your scar, the story behind it, and the issues you have help me ensure that I give you the best treatment I can.

🛏 Next, you get comfy on the couch.
Unlike massage, you stay clothed for this, with just your scar showing.

💆🏻‍♀️ Once you're settled, I make a start. It's a really gentle treatment where I use a combination of MFR (myofascial release) and gentle massage to work on the scar and the surrounding area.
I'll always talk through what I'm planning to do, and I encourage you to talk to me throughout about any sensations you notice. (Some people feel tingling, pain, feelings of hot/cold etc.).
If anything feels too much at any time you let me know, and I stop.

📆 Afterwards, we'll talk about further sessions, and I'll always aim to share some techniques you can use at home to continue your healing journey.

💜 Read all of this but still not sure?
I'm always at the end of the phone or just an email away if you'd like to have a chat - or you can click the link in the comments for more info. 👇🏼

As it's International Caesarean Awareness Month, it's time to share my own story...

👶🏼 I had an emergency caesarean when our daughter was born. I hadn't even considered that this might happen, but when she decided it was time to make an appearance 3 weeks early, we ended up in theatre (despite arriving at hospital already fully dilated!), and there wasn't any time to think about it then, either...

👨🏽‍⚕️ I'd never had an operation before, and with a caesarean, it's easy to forget you've just had major abdominal surgery. Often, you're awake while it happens, and before you know it, you've got a baby to look after, so your own healing takes a back seat.

I was lucky - my scar on the outside healed really well. But I couldn't touch it. It was numb and horrible and a huge area of my abdomen felt like it didn't belong to me.
And it hurt sometimes, deep on one side.
But never mind, eh?

❌ But it shouldn't be, "Oh, never mind."

💜 I didn't know scar tissue release was a thing until I heard about the training.
I had my scar treated by other therapists who were with me on the course, and Oh. My. Goodness.
Amazing.
I woke up after the first day and I could touch my scar without feeling cringey and tearful. The numbness had gone. And it doesn't hurt any more.

⭐ In those who've had caesareans, I've seen treatments relieve lower back pain, reduce tightness and pulling sensations, and lessen that unpleasant numb feeling.

🌤 Not only can it help with physical symptoms, but it can also help to release emotions that our bodies are holding on to. (For me, I was surprised to find this was a very anxious feeling - because I'd always said it hadn't been a traumatic birth. Turns out it was, I'd just been too preoccupied at the time to realise. 🤦🏻‍♀️)

🥰 I continue to be amazed by the results that can be achieved with this gentle treatment - so please don't think you have to live with the after effects of whatever type of surgery you've had.

This month is International Caesarean Awareness Month - the perfect time to share this video again!

👶🏽 Around 1 in 4 births in the UK are caesarean births*, and this figure seems to be on the increase.
There are four categories of caesarean, ranging from 4 - planned, to 1 - where there is an immediate threat to the life of the woman or baby (sounds scary, doesn't it?).

🤰🏼 Regardless of the category, a caesarean is major abdominal surgery. But often you're awake when it happens, and then you have a baby to look after, and somehow this makes it seem less of a big deal. But look at the video and all those layers... That's a lot of healing that needs to happen afterwards.

🏥 I had an emergency caesarean when our daughter was born in 2016. I hadn't even considered the fact I might need one, so I was completely unprepared for it.

🤔 How many of you have had a c-section and were packed off home with your baby and some information about looking after a newborn, but absolutely nothing about caring for yourself apart from some medication to take? I certainly was - and I'd bet I'm not the only one...

💜 I first learnt about scar tissue release when I was training to be a massage therapist. Scar tissue release can be a really effective way to promote healing - both physically and emotionally.
🤔 Maybe you're experiencing pain, numbness or tightness around your scar.
🤔 Maybe you have lower back pain that you didn't have before.
🤔 Maybe you feel pulling sensations along your scar.
Whatever you're experiencing, scar tissue release is a gentle treatment that can help to resolve those issues.

So, the moral of this very long story is: don't feel you need to live with the pain and discomfort your scar may be causing...
