You may have seen posts circulating online today about gel polish being ‘banned’ due to a ‘toxic ingredient’ which has terrifying fertility risks. I want to reassure you that these posts are misleading clickbait to get more views.

What is actually happening is that the ingredient TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Dipheny|phosphine Oxide) is being phased out in nail products due to new EU/UK regulations. This regulation has not yet been brought to the uk but we will most likely see a transition to products that do not contain TPO within the next year.

The European Commission's regulations are set to reshape the landscape of the nail industry by banning certain substances classified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction).

CMR substances pose potential health risks and the new regulations aim to eliminate these risks in cosmetic products.

TPO is not only found in gels, but also in printing inks and materials used in dental applications such as fillings and bonding.
�Leading nail expert and chemist Jim McConnell has said that ‘The amount of TPO that would have to be ingested to cause infertility is so large it would nearly be impossible to accomplish without great effort.’

So please do not panic or worry.

Gel polish/BIAB has not been banned.

It is still safe for you to have your nails done.

The UK is expected to implement the ban from late 2026, which gives us all enough time to start converting to gels that are TPO free. UK manufacturers have already started reformulating their gels.

In the interest of complete transparency, The Gel Bottle products that I use do contain TPO. The HONA products that I use do not contain TPO.

If you are happy to continue using The Gel Bottle products until the ban comes into place and until The Gel Bottle reformulate their BIAB, you are safe to do so. However, if you would feel more comfortable moving over to HONA products for your manicure, please let me know! I absolutely love the HONA products and I received a delivery yesterday of their new TrueBuild formula which is said to be their strongest builder gel yet!

If you message before 5pm I will have no option but to push your message to the back of the queue. I’m sorry if this seems harsh bit I’ve had to say it a few too many times!

I have realised that in the lead up to my holiday, I am working as many extra hours as I can, so I haven’t allowed myself dedicated time for replies to my diary opening….. oops.

So please still message me at 5pm on Friday but if I don’t reply for a couple of days, please bear with me!
