Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when scar tissue or micro-trauma cause a narrowing and constricting of the carpal tunnel. This passageway is formed from the retinaculum of the wrist and the carpal bones on the palmar side of the wrist, and it acts as a conduit for tendons that help attach to the forearm and help move the fingers, and the median nerve. The median nerve gives feeling to the thumb, index and middle fingers, and half of the ring finger. It also controls the movement of the small muscles at the base of the thumb.
