FRIDAY FACTS
Massage may help reduce insulin resistance.
Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, putting our bodies into “rest and digest” mode. This in turn promotes the release of hormones that can speak up our metabolism. These factors can reduce insulin resistance, helping us to feel better and process our food better.
Han, Y., Lu, Z., Chen, S. et al. Abdominal Massage Alleviates Skeletal Muscle Insulin Resistance by Regulating the AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α Signaling Pathway. Cell Biochem Biophys 79, 895–903 (2021).

I’m a keen hiker, so very pleased to get this certificate for hiking all 68 miles of the Borders Abbeys Way - one of Scotland’s Great Trails - over the course of 5 days last year. The experience was amazing and gave me massive respect for marathon runners and other endurance athletes. It also deepened my appreciation for the benefits of massage for recovery!
FRIDAY FACTS
Sports Massage can improve symptoms of plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a deterioration of the soft tissue at the heel. It affects 10% of the population and can make walking painful.
Although it is often not possible to massage the heel itself due to the discomfort cause by PF. Trigger-point release applied to the glutes, hamstrings, and calves can reduce pain and increase functionality, according to a 2021 study.

MASSAGE AND THE MOVIES
Okay, not exactly the movies, but TV.
I couldn’t resist posting this story because a) it proves celebrities are mental b) it lets me make a wider point…
Pain does NOT mean gain. A massage should not hurt or “tenderise” you.A skilled massage therapist can use a wide variety of techniques to remove adhesions and lengthen muscles (compressions, Petrisage, muscle energy techniques, Hesch method etc). None of them need to hurt to be effective. And none of them involve teeth!
Don’t be a silly celeb. Book a normal massage with a normal massage therapist.

MASSAGE AND THE MOVIES
After my truly brilliant analysis last week about how massage could have advanced the plot of Send Help, I thought I might do a regular post linking massage and movies - just for fun.
So here is probably the most famous reference to massage on film - the brilliant Pulp Fiction (1994). Basically, don’t listen to Vincent…or Jules. Actually ignore more or less everything that gets said about foot massage in this film.
A foot massage can be incredibly beneficial for athletes or anyone with leg or posture issues.
WARNING - LANGUAGE
