A memory came across me today with this photo.

Eight years ago today.

This photo was taken on our way to the BBC London studios for an interview on the Victoria Derbyshire Show. The topic was "Excluded at 5."

At that point, Lo had already been permanently excluded from mainstream school and was attending a PRU. I'd lost my job, and life felt like life was unravelling.

In the months before this photo, I'd lost my mum after her long battle with cancer. I also lost one uncle to cancer, another uncle after a lifetime of addiction, my nan had suffered a stroke, my grandad's dementia had rapidly deteriorated all in the same year, and I'd already lost my dad in 2012. There was so much more happening behind the scenes that I won't go into, but it was one of the hardest chapters of my life.

Looking back now, I realise that pain didn't define me... it shaped me.

It gave me compassion, resilience and a determination to fight for children who, like Lo, didn't fit into the traditional education system.

Not long afterwards, I met Hannah.

We shared the same belief: that every young person deserves to be understood, supported and given the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their past or the labels they've been given.

Together, we built The Elite Studio Alternative Provision.

What started with a shared vision has become a place where young people are seen for their strengths instead of their struggles. A place where confidence is rebuilt, futures are changed and success is measured in so much more than exam results.

And speaking of exam results...

Lo never returned to mainstream school, but this year he sat his GCSEs and is predicted to achieve grades 4 and above.

Eight years ago, I couldn't have imagined writing those words.

If someone had told me then what our lives would look like today, I simply wouldn't have believed them.

The journey hasn't been easy, but I wouldn't change it, because every challenge led me to where I was meant to be.

So if you're reading this while you're in the middle of your own storm, please don't believe that where you are today is where you'll always be.

If your child has been excluded, if life feels overwhelming, if you've lost your direction, or if people have made you feel like you've failed—don't give up.

Some of the most beautiful journeys begin when everything seems to fall apart.

Keep believing. Keep fighting. Keep showing up.

Because success doesn't always come from following the expected path. Sometimes it comes from having the courage to create a new one.

Today marks our last day of term, and what a journey it has been. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have achieved, the confidence they have built, and the memories we have created together. 💛

We are now looking ahead with excitement as we prepare to welcome all of our new students joining us for the academic year 2026–2027. We cannot wait to meet you, support you, and be part of your journey at Elite. 🌟

But before the new academic year begins, it’s time for our amazing team to take a well-earned break. Our staff work tirelessly every day to support our learners, create opportunities, and make Elite the special place it is.

We have loved welcoming our work experience girls into Elite Studio EA Ltd this week and watching them grow in confidence, develop new skills, and experience what life is like within a professional hair and beauty environment. 💇‍♀️✨

Throughout the week they have been building on their practical skills, learning new techniques, developing their communication, teamwork, customer service, and understanding the importance of professionalism within the industry.

It has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to learn. Every achievement, big or small, is a step towards building confidence and preparing for their future pathways. 🌟

A huge well done to you both — you should be incredibly proud of how much you have achieved this week! 👏

Today has been one of our most challenging days to date… but also one of our most rewarding. 💙

Every day in Alternative Provision brings its own challenges, and today certainly tested us. There were moments that required patience, resilience, teamwork, and a determination to never give up on the young people we support.

Despite the obstacles, we achieved every goal we set out to accomplish. Days like today remind us why we do what we do. Success isn’t always measured by what happens easily—it’s measured by the barriers we overcome together.

We couldn’t be prouder of our incredible team, who consistently go above and beyond, and of our amazing students, who continue to show strength, determination, and growth every single day.

The challenging days are often the ones that make the biggest difference. Today proved that with the right support, belief, and teamwork, anything is possible.
