•|What is a “Braid Map”? A “Braid Map” is the number of rows set ahead of time to complete a “normal” install. For example: Depending on the stylist, a Small Knotless install would require 10 rows. 4 below the ear & 6 above the ear. Braid Mapping also helps you to complete your installs in a set amount of time. A normal install could take you 7 hours, right? Maybe less if you’re that girl from down south🫠So w that said, They also help you correctly price your installs. If you need to adjust and add a row, you’re braiding more braids which means your spending more time than normal on one client’s head. A normal 7 hour install just became an 8 hour install. More Time will ALWAYS mean More Money. Note: Always discuss up-charges with your client before proceeding.* Braid Maps are also subjective and can change from stylist to stylist. And also, client to client. Which brings me to: Why Should You Adjust Your Braid Map? Simple. Because every client’s head is different. Some clients have *cough cough* larger heads. Some clients have *ahem* longer heads. Sometimes their nape (section below ear to nape/neck) is longer. Sometimes their heads are wider. Sometimes their hair is thinner and things need to be adjusted to create a fuller look. In these instances, you’d need to add more rows to accommodate any of these situations. This ensures that your smalls, mediums, larges or WHATEVER size you’re doing stays the size they are supposed to be and you are being paid according to the work put in.

Things are hotting up for Scotland!

Check out my feature in the No.1 magazine article highlighting some of the challenges we are still facing as black people. I’d like to think most people agree that racism should be a thing of the past. It should be but sadly it isn’t. Speaking out about certain issues is the only way we can make a real change in societies. People being cruel is one thing but do we really understand what it means to be discriminated against simply because of the colour of ones skin and texture of their hair?

Why are we not more used to the idea of versatility within the black diaspora? I think It’s time now for us to stamp out some of our obvious identity crises.

This clash of identity and discrimination has been the influence of my whole hair career. I wanted to be able to express myself in my own appearance as this influenced how I felt about myself and was perceived from as young as I can remember. Once I grasped this it’s been my driving motivation to help other women feel as beautiful and confident and they wanted. And now it’s my mission to teach others to be able to care for their hair and onwards into their communities.

This is the influence behind Hairdreamsglasgow, Glasgows first Natural Hair-design training salon.

If we feel cared for then we can be kinder and care for others in the same way.
