Vitamin A 🤍

I wanted to provide some clarity about this absolute superhero of an ingredient, as so many of my clients have mentioned how confusing it is with all the different names of vitamin A derivates, and knowing what it’s good for.

Originally used to treat acne, vitamin A has a wealth of other benefits such as increasing cell renewal to smooth skin texture, stimulating collagen production to combat fine lines and wrinkles, reducing sebum, and helping to block the formation of pigmentation to even out skin tone.

Retinol, Retinaldehyde (retinal) and Retinol Esters (retinyl palmitate) are all derivatives of vitamin A and need to be converted into Retinoic Acid before the skin can use it.

Retinol Esters —> Retinol —> Retinaldehyde —> Retinoic Acid

Whichever derivative of vitamin A you decide to use, the closer it is to Retinoic Acid, the more effective it is and the quicker you will get results. Retinol is the classic and most common form of vitamin A, however Retinaldehyde (retinal) is 2.8x more biologically similar to the vitamin A found in our body, meaning that it works 11x faster than retinol.

However, with all good things there are downsides - vitamin A must be stabilised and have some form of controlled release into the skin to minimise irritation. It is to be introduced gradually and at night time only, and SPF must be worn everyday (this is a non-negotiable for all my clients using vitamin A).

When used correctly and in whatever form is best for your skin, vitamin A is the holy grail of skincare ingredients which should be a staple in everyone’s routine.
