“What if I can’t justify spending this on myself?”
This one doesn’t get enough airtime, but it should because it’s one I hear all too often.
We’ll spend money on our children. Our home. Holidays. Gifts.
Without hesitation. But when it’s our own face?
Suddenly we need a committee meeting 🤣
We start mentally itemising what else that money could go towards. You downplay it.
“It’s not necessary.” “It’s indulgent.” “It’s a bit frivolous.”
And yet you’ve been thinking about it for months. It bothers you often enough that it’s taking up space in your head.
The question isn’t whether it’s essential. Very little beyond food and heating is really essential isn’t it.
The question is whether it would quietly improve how you feel day to day.
If it would, that has value. Spending money on yourself doesn’t make you selfish.
It makes you included. You’re allowed to be on your own list (that VERY long list!)
Not at the bottom of it
If it makes you happy, surely it’s worth it 💖

Let’s talk about what hydrated skin actually looks like.
Because I think people have got very confused about what hydrated skin actually is. Somewhere along the line, “hydrated” became this glossy, glass-like finish where you look permanently reflective.
That isn’t hydration.
That’s usually a combination of oil, highlighter, and good lighting or a skin that’s had the top (protective) layer removed to give it that shine.
Hydrated skin is much more normal than that.
Hydrated skin looks calm and comfortable.
It looks like your face isn’t screaming quietly under your makeup.
Proper hydration isn’t about looking shiny, It’s about a skin that’s functioning well.
And the biggest sign of hydrated skin is not glow — it’s balance. No tightness after cleansing. No flaky patches that appear halfway through the day. No feeling like your face is about to crack when the heating’s on.
Hydrated skin is soft, smooth and has a bit of bounce to it.
A lot of women think they have “dry skin” when actually their skin is dehydrated.
So what’s the difference between dry and dehydrated skin
💧 Dry skin is a skin type.
💧 Dehydrated skin is a condition — and it can happen to anyone, even to oily skin.
Especially midlife skin as hormones change everything. Suddenly your skin is doing things you didn’t ask for.
You start reacting to products, your skin feels dull, your makeup doesn’t sit well.
So you think you need something harsh or exfoliating…
When actually, your skin is just thirsty.
I always say that dry skin is the symptom NOT the cause of the problem.
Hydrated skin also isn’t perfect.
It still has pores, texture and expression lines AND it still looks like skin, really skin. Not shiny plastic.
And that’s something I wish more women understood.
Hydration isn’t about erasing every sign of being alive, it’s about your skin looking rested and healthy. Like it’s being loved and cared for, not constantly attacked.Because many women are over-exfoliating, over-cleansing, using too many actives…
And then wondering why their skin looks worse. You cannot bully your skin into glowing or simply scrape away the dryness.
You have to support it.
Show it some love ❤️

I’m often asked if home LED masks are worth having.
Well, there’s many factors you should consider when looking into getting your own device and price certainty shouldn’t be a deciding factor.
Our ONLY machine of choice at HSS is of course Dermalux and in their own words here’s what the say about light therapy…
“Effective phototherapy relies on precision.
• Clinically proven wavelengths.
• Narrow spectral accuracy.
• Optimised irradiance and dose.
Dermalux LED systems are engineered to deliver light at the correct wavelength and power density required to stimulate cellular response. This ensures energy is not just emitted, but biologically effective.
Dermalux devices are built around these principles, delivering clinically validated results.”
You’ll make your own choices as to whether or not to buy a home device but can they compare to in clinic treatments?
Absolutely not!

Myth one: “If it stings, it’s working.”
No.
If it stings, your skin is irritated.
We need to stop romanticising discomfort in skincare.
Your face is not meant to feel like it’s being mildly chemical-burned into submission.
Healthy skin is calm, not inflamed, not tingling, not fighting for its life.
Myth two: “Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser.”
Wrong.
Oily skin can still be dehydrated.
In fact, sometimes oily skin is oily because it’s dehydrated and overcompensating. Moisturising isn’t optional!
Myth three: “The more products, the better.”
Absolutely not.
Most people are doing too much.
Too many actives, too many steps, too much switching.
Your skin does not want a different routine every week because someone on Instagram discovered a new ingredient.
It wants consistency, skin thrives on boring.
Myth four: “You can shrink your pores.”
You cannot.
Pores are pores.
They’re meant to be there.
You can make them look less obvious by keeping skin hydrated and clean, but you cannot erase them unless you plan on becoming a plastic doll.
And I don’t recommend that 🙈
Myth five: “Ageing is something to fix.”
This one is the biggest.
Ageing is not a flaw, it’s something that happens to all of us and the most normal thing in the world we’ve just been taught to treat it like an emergency.
Your skin will change, your face will change that doesn’t mean something has gone wrong it means you have lived and you’re normal. The goal is not to look 25 forever, it’s to look healthy, rested, and like yourself.
Myth six: “Expensive skincare is automatically better.”
Not always. Some of the best products are affordable.
Some of the worst are expensive.
Marketing is powerful, price is not proof the product is any good.
So if you’ve believed any of these myths — don’t worry.
We all have.
Skincare is full of noise and nonsense!
The older I get, the more I believe in simplicity, consistency, and not treating your face like it needs correcting and I’ve never deviated in my choice of products for over 25 years!

“I wish I’d started sooner.”
It’s something I hear all too often from clients and they’re usually talking about skincare, self-care, prioritising themselves… all of it.
But we’ve got that habit of waiting don’t we.
Waiting until the kids are older, waiting until work calms down, waiting until we feel “deserving” or “ready”
Waiting until we’ve hit some imaginary point where it’s finally acceptable to look after ourselves.
And the truth is… that point never really comes does it.
Life doesn’t suddenly get quiet, responsibility’s don’t disappear, hormones don’t politely settle down.
There’s always something.
So what we really mean when we say “I wish I’d started sooner” is:
“I wish I hadn’t put myself last for so long.”
We wish we’d worn SPF daily (think Baz Luhmann! 🤣) instead of treating it like a holiday product. We wish we’d moisturised properly instead of scrubbing their face like it owed them money. We wish we’d stopped chasing daft trends on TikTok and stuck to simple, consistent care.
We wish they’d asked questions sooner instead of feeling embarrassed about not knowing what was best for our own skins.
But honestly, the biggest thing women wish they started sooner is being kinder to themselves.
Not spending decades criticising their face, their body, their ageing, their tiredness.
Because you know what the funny thing is, most of us look back at photos from ten years ago and think:
“I looked great… why did I think I didn’t?”
We’re all guilty of it, I certainly am and it’s pretty sad that we didn’t realise it at the time.
Because it shows how much time women waste thinking they’re not enough.
So yes, people wish they’d started sooner.
But I always think: start now.
Now is sooner.
Your forties are not too late.
Your fifties are not too late.
Even if you’ve done nothing until this point, doing something small now still matters.
Not because you need fixing but you deserve care and you don’t get bonus points for burning yourself out first.
Start now.
Future-you will be grateful 💖
And you don’t need to wait for permission.
