On 1st May 2014, I started my new venture with Tropic, which means that I've been running my Shabari Loves Tropic business for exactly 10 years.

In these 10 years I would say that I have learnt a lot in terms of running a very small business with no prior experience, getting to grips with all the aspects of the business, learning about the industry, gaining a wide range of skills that are needed, understanding the products, ingredients and their benefits, discovering how to use social media, keeping on top of the admin, planning and organising events, and so on.

As a vegan of almost 27 years, I am highly knowledgeable regarding the subject of veganism as an ethical and cruelty-free way of living and can advise people on the lifestyle, which includes choosing vegan and cruelty-free skincare and cosmetics.

I have a very good understanding of skin issues, chemicals that should be avoided, and can give skincare and makeup consultations by telephone.

Before I started this business, for a long time I was looking for beauty products that I could be happy with. I tried a number of vegan brands but was never satisfied with the quality. With Tropic I found products that tick all the boxes of being high quality, vegan, cruelty-free, natural and eco-friendly.

I have had some amazing opportunities such as exhibiting all over the country (pre-pandemic), giving talks about chemical-free living and veganism to various audiences, and meeting so many different people who I wouldn't have ordinarily met.

I pride myself on going that extra mile (even virtually) to make sure that customers and clients feel that they are important and can ask me anything at any time of the day.

Here's what Elly has to say:
"To me, comfort food should also be nourishing – and with my skin feeling so fresh thanks to Tropic, my body needs to follow! Meal prep this gorgeous superfood-packed mince for the week and thank me later…"

Ingredients (serves 3-4):
100g walnuts
30g mixed seeds
250g chestnut mushrooms
100g roasted red peppers, chopped
1.5 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1.5 tbsp tomato purée

For the avocado crema:
1 avocado
40g jalapeños
Juice of 1/2 a lime
Handful fresh coriander
100g non-dairy yogurt

Serve with:
Mini tortillas
Pickled radish
Vegan sour cream
Coriander

Method:
1. Blitz the mushrooms and add to a pan on medium heat, fry until all the water has evaporated.
2. Blitz up the walnuts and seeds until they turn into a fine mince and set aside.
3. Add the tomato puree and seasonings into the pan with the mushrooms and fry off until fragrant. Add a pinch of salt and pepper too.
4. Add the red pepper and seed mixture in and mix well.
5. For the crema, simply combine all ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth.
6. Either serve immediately or keep these ingredients in the fridge for up to 3 days, and your work lunches are sorted.

We are organising our first ever marketplace event at SEEDS HUB in Wembley, which is a social enterprise backed by Caritas Westminster that supports local businesses that have a social impact.

The stallholders are local independent business owners offering a range of products, services and experiences from eco-friendly vegan products, plant-based skin and haircare products, body art sessions, tailored clothes and other items, recruitment services and many more.
