What actually happens if something goes wrong with an aesthetic treatment?

It’s one of the questions I don’t think gets talked about enough, and I think you deserve to know.

The most common issue after anti wrinkle treatment is asymmetry, where one side settles slightly differently from the other. It’s not unusual and, in most cases, it’s easily adjusted at your two week review. That’s exactly why I include follow up appointments as part of your treatment.

With filler, one of the reassuring things to know is that hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. Whether a result isn’t quite right or a complication develops, I keep dissolving agent in clinic and I’m trained to use it.

The more serious complications, such as a blocked blood supply, are rare but they are real. The important thing isn’t pretending they never happen. It’s recognising the signs early and acting quickly if they do.

As a nurse and independent prescriber, patient safety has always been at the centre of how I practise. Emergency protocols, clinical follow up and complication management aren’t extras. They’re simply part of providing safe care.

When you’re choosing a practitioner, ask them one simple question:

“What happens if something goes wrong?”

The answer will tell you a lot about the care you can expect.

Some treatments are perfect before you travel. Others need to wait until you’re back. Here’s the breakdown:

Book before you go (at least 2–3 weeks before travel):
✔ Anti-wrinkle - no sun sensitivity, just allow 2 weeks for full effect to settle
✔ Profhilo and skin boosters - brilliant pre-holiday, gives your skin a genuine glow
✔ Lip filler - book 2–3 weeks ahead to allow any initial swelling to fully settle

Wait until after you’re back:
✖ Chemical peels - increased sun sensitivity post-treatment, not ideal before a sunny holiday
✖ Microneedling - same reason, the skin needs to heal away from UV

The rule of thumb: if a treatment involves any downtime or sun sensitivity - book it for September. Your skin will thank you.
