The Northern hemisphere welcomes the longest day of the year and the first day of summer today, as the sun reaches it’s northernmost position in the sky.

It is believed that the Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire of a unique stone circle was erected in order to establish the date of the June Summer solstice.

When viewed from it’s centre, the sun rises at a particular point on this day and theories suggest that Stonehenge uses the solstice as a starting point to count the days of the year and therefore be a marker to figure out the calendar of when to plant and harvest crops.
