Summer management advice for horse owners | Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons 17/07/2022

A little note for all horse owners in regards to the coming few days weather πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅

Monday:
25 degrees at 9am
Reaching 30 at midday
Staying in the early 30s until gone 8pm πŸ₯΅

Tuesday:
30 degrees by 10am
Reach 35 at midday
Climbing to 36 by 4pm
Staying in the early 30s until 8pm πŸ₯΅

(Heat will β€˜feel’ 2-3 degrees hotter than this!)

πŸ”₯There will always be another show/clinic/training event etc! but there is only one of your horse πŸ₯°

πŸ”₯Make sure you think twice before riding/travelling/competing etc over the next couple of days πŸ€”

πŸ”₯ Also be careful with turnout to ensure your horse can stay cool- access to shade and fresh water, avoid turnout at the hottest times! A couple of days without turnout isn’t going to kill your horse, the heat might! πŸ₯΅

πŸ”₯ Similarly whilst they are in try to keep them as cool as possible with cold hosing, fresh air were possible and always again access to fresh clean water!

If you are going to ride I’d suggest doing so very early in the morning only and aiming for gentle sessions with lots of rest breaks! Be extremely aware of how your horse is responding to the work and base the session around that!

Your horse relies on you to keep them safe, comfortable and well ❀️

Sponsored Rider Sam and Frankie, looking absolutely mega! 🀩

I see Frankie twice a month, for a massage and also a laser session! This keeps him performing to his best and ensuring he is comfortable and supple! 😊

These sessions are so important especially when progressing up the levels and asking the horse to take on the more challenging work! πŸ’ͺ

By seeing him regularly we can stay on top of any niggles that may come from the increase in work as well as aiding muscle recovery and condition and maintaining suppleness and flexibility (alongside other benefits)! 🩺

πŸ™Œ Ponies need some TLC too! πŸ™Œ

I met the wonderful Roo today for our first session ! ❀
Ali Berman Martin Fox

She was generally a bit tight all over, all easily released through her treatment which she thoroughly enjoyed, along with some good stretches at the end! πŸ‘

Even ponies that are only ridden lightly can still develop tightness and possible sore spots!
Having a massage treatment every couple of months will be really beneficial for them to stay happy and comfortable! πŸ‘
Ponies in more intense work, or ridden by lots of different people such as a riding school environment, may need TLC a bit more often! 😊

So go on, treat your cheeky little ponies this year! They'll thank you for it πŸ₯°

This is so important! πŸ’―

It honestly doesn't make us think any less of you or your horse, we always have their best interest at heart and want to be able to help!

Being made aware of things like this can make the whole process that little bit easier to manage and hopefully then makes for a positive experience for all involved! πŸ‘

Really interesting information here to think about! πŸ‘

Remember each horse is an individual and so of course you must take into account their personal needs, but also remember that just because you are cold πŸ₯Ά, doesn't mean your horse is πŸ₯΅ !

Did you know... πŸ’

The hindgut of the equine, acts like a central heating system! During the process of the fermentation of fibre, heat is produced! Therefore horses with access to lots of forage are able to keep themselves warm and maintain their body temperature!

Also if you don't already, I would highly recommend signing up to Dr David Marlin's website, it's full of useful knowledge on a vast array of topics! πŸ“š

Now this may not look like much to most, but this is such a milestone with Frankie! πŸ₯³

I've been treating Frank for a long time and he is the most sensitive horse I work with both physically and mentally!

When I first started I could barely get my hands on him for any length of time due to him being so nervous and also holding quite a lot of tension.

We have over a long time really improved his body condition, through massage and laser and also Sam has done an amazing job with her riding to improve his musculature and posture. He is so much stronger and more supple πŸ’ͺ

Well today was the first time that Frankie rested his hind limbs throughout the whole treatment! 😴

He has really come such a long way with trusting me and the process of each treatment and knowing that he can rest and relax during the session. πŸ–

Video in the comments showing how relaxed he is during his sessions now! πŸ“½

So great to see how well Sam and Frankie are going! πŸ₯³

Love watching them progress! πŸŽ‰

Frankie will be having his laser treatment tomorrow afternoon, perfect after a days competing today!

Laser therapy offers many benefits:
βœ… promotes tissue repair
βœ… reduces inflammation
βœ… reduces pain
βœ… aids in recovery
βœ… improves the bodies ability to maintain and repair effectively
βœ… drug free and non invasive

Laser therapy is so beneficial for performance maintenance and potential enhancement!
Frankie benefits from laser therapy in his Performance Maintenance Programme, where he has monthly sessions along with monthly massage sessions!
