She originally came to me after having previous filler dissolved elsewhere, trusting me to start fresh and create the soft, natural result she truly wanted. We began with a conservative 0.5ml, allowing the lips to heal, settle and integrate properly before considering any further enhancement.

Fast forward.. and just like I always say - “you’ll be back” - she was indeed back in the chair for another 0.5ml😅.

This is something I educate all of my clients on. When lip filler is placed correctly and tailored to your anatomy, it doesn’t look overdone or obvious. In fact, once swelling subsides and the product integrates with the tissue, it can appear incredibly subtle.. sometimes so subtle that clients simply miss that fresh, slightly swollen lip look!

I recently had this painting created by oliviamaypaints - and just to be clear, this is in no way an ad. I purchased this myself because I genuinely fell in love with her work.. and I honestly think she deserves so much more recognition.

Olivia’s art is all based around women empowerment, which is exactly what my clinic stands for. Creating a space where you feel confident, uplifted and like the best version of yourself is always my goal - so to have a piece that reflects that so perfectly just feels so special.

I’m fully outing myself here, and honestly, it feels a bit like a digital strip tease. While the photo on the left looks rough, that wasn’t even my "final boss" skin level - if I posted the peak of my breakout era, the community guidelines would probably have me arrested for public indecency😅.

I’ve lived through the dark ages of picking, prodding and those "okay" days where I only had five active volcanoes instead of ten. Since age nine - thanks to Mother Nature, for the early gift of womanhood and a face that resembled a deep dish pizza, I’ve been in the trenches. It wasn't until 21 that I finally saw the light and at 23, I’m finally standing on the other side of the war zone.

Lapiena Lipssom vs Dermal Filler?¿

When this client came to me, she initially asked for a slight plump. Upon consultation, we discussed all options - lip flip, dermal filler and lip boosters - and this is where understanding anatomy becomes so important.

The lips aren’t just about volume. They are made up of delicate tissue, a defined border and a natural balance between structure and hydration. In this case, her lip structure was already beautifully proportioned. The vermilion border was defined, the shape was there and there was no true volume deficiency. What was lacking was hydration within the tissue itself.

Adding dermal filler in a situation like this can sometimes mask the real issue. Filler sits within the lip to create volume and structure, but if the tissue is dehydrated, it can lead to a heavier look without truly improving the quality of the lips. This is where a treatment like Lapiena Lipssom becomes far more beneficial.

Lipssom works within the tissue to improve hydration, elasticity and overall lip quality. Instead of physically enlarging the lips, it enhances the way light reflects off them, giving that subtle “plump” effect without altering the natural anatomy. STOP this “trend”✋🏼.

I keep seeing videos to which aesthetic practitioners are saying that “the second they look at someone, they automatically start analysing their face and thinking about what treatments they should have”.

This mindset really doesn’t sit right with me - but this post might be controversial🤷🏼‍♀️.

Personally, I have never looked at one of my clients and thought “ooh she could do with a bit of chin filler and a touch of b’tox”.

Constantly analysing someone’s facial structure and deciding what they ‘SHOULD’ do is incredibly judgemental. More importantly, it can easily create insecurities that didn’t exist in the first place.

As practitioners, our job isn’t to scan a face and build a list of treatments - our job is to listen.

Listen to:
• What the client would like to enhance.
• What kind of result they would like to achieve..& then advise accordingly.

If my client doesn’t mention her chin, I’m not going to suggest chin filler - why would I plant an insecurity that wasn’t there to begin with?

To me, practitioners who immediately start pointing out areas to “fix” are a red flag!🚩

A green flag practitioner will start with a thorough consultation and base their advice around what you desire, not what they think they can add on✅.

If a client comes in wanting to focus on lips, then we focus on lips - I’m not sitting there thinking about how I can get them to add chin filler too.

In fact, there have been many times where a client has said to me, “I think I need lip filler,” and my response has been -
“absolutely not, they’re beautiful.”

Sometimes we might discuss something more subtle, like hydration or a small lift - and sometimes the best advice is simply no treatment at all.

What concerns me is how many clients come into my clinic saying - “my previous practitioner told me I needed filler here, here and here..”

What on earth is going on?

Aesthetics should be about enhancing confidence, not creating problems on someone’s face that they never saw before!🫣

Sometimes the most important part of aesthetics isn’t adding more.. it’s undoing what shouldn’t have been done in the first place.

This client came to see me after a very poor experience with dermal fillers. He originally went for what he believed would be a tear trough treatment to improve mild volume loss under the eyes. Unfortunately, the filler was not placed in the tear trough at all - it had actually been deposited into the cheek area, leaving him with puffiness and an unnatural appearance.

What shocked me even more was being told that another attempt was made to microneedle the area to try and “move the filler around”.
This simply doesn’t work. Dermal filler is placed much deeper within the tissue, whereas microneedling only treats the superficial layers of the skin. Not only is it ineffective for moving filler, it can also cause unnecessary trauma to the area.

On top of this, the client had also undergone treatments that were not suitable for his skin type, resulting in scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that he had never experienced before.

The first and most important step was to dissolve the misplaced filler, allowing the tissue to return to its natural state. Once we had addressed that, we discussed a treatment plan that would actually target his original concern - dark circles and skin quality - which is why we will be moving forward with polynucleotides.

This case is a reminder that a thorough consultation and proper treatment planning are everything. Not every concern requires filler, and the right practitioner will always prioritise safety, suitability and long-term results over simply performing a treatment.

Aesthetics should never leave you with more problems than you started with. Safety and education will always come first in my clinic!👏🏼
