April 12 reopening date confirmed for beauty salons in England Personal care businesses in England, including beauty salons and spas, can reopen from April 12, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed.

This afternoon (22 February) the Prime Minister announced that, all being well, the Personal Care sector can re-open on 12 April under Step 2 of the Government’s roadmap for re-opening. The date of re-opening depends on the rollout of the vaccine, the rate of infections and the impact of any new variants.

The NHBF, together with other sector bodies, is continuing to press the government for a package of support including:

- a Personal Care Relief Fund to keep businesses afloat until they can re-open, and
- a cut in VAT to 5% to enable the hardest-hit businesses to recover once they are open again and operating under government guidelines

These support measures are essential to ensure the hair and beauty sector survives, restarts and recovers in the coming months and we continue to fight for you on this basis.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced this afternoon that further areas across England will be placed into the toughest Tier 4 restrictions. This includes the remaining parts of the South East, as well as large parts of the Midlands, North-East and South-West England at 00.01 on 31 December. This will require the closure of all personal care services (including mobile businesses).

The Coronavirus Business Grant and Local Restrictions Support Grant given to businesses forced to close under the Tier restrictions will be available for Tier 4 businesses. With three-quarters of England now in Tier 4 we are continuing to lobby on behalf of the industry for targeted financial support.

Following the Prime Minister’s update tonight. Boris Johnson announced that next week the government will set out a timetable for remaining businesses to reopen.

The PM mentioned 'nail bars' within his speech so we hope that we will receive further updates and timescales on when beauty business in England will be able to reopen.
