🩺 Let’s talk about Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) & waxing

HS is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects areas where skin rubs together, such as the underarms, groin, bikini line and under the breasts. It can cause painful lumps, abscesses, tunnels under the skin (sinus tracts) and scarring.

One question that frequently comes up on my consultation forms is, “I have HS, can I still be waxed?”

The answer is that it depends on the condition of your skin on the day of your appointment. If you have an active flare-up, broken skin or open wounds, waxing that area wouldn’t be suitable as it could worsen irritation and delay healing. However, if your HS is well controlled and the skin is healthy, waxing may be an option.

Some people with HS find that reducing the need for frequent shaving can help minimise irritation and ingrown hairs, although waxing is not a treatment or cure for HS, and everyone’s skin responds differently.

If you have HS, please don’t feel embarrassed to mention it on your consultation form. It simply allows me to assess your skin, adapt your treatment if needed, and ensure your appointment is as safe and comfortable as possible. Every treatment is carried out with professionalism, discretion and without judgement. 🤍
