Since the beginning of 2016, things have started to pick up. I had my yearly plan all laid out: at least a job a month - I can manage that! Right?
Thankfully and amazingly, I have done so far. And in some cases, more than one job.
So... I'll begin in January.
January was the month of graduate short films. I worked on two - one called Spilt Milk which was directed by James Dunstan who is, or now was, a student at UCA Farnham featuring Lucy Chappell, Tom Rhys Harries and Bobby Schofield; and the other is Jailbird - A Musical Disaster which was directed by Lexy Anderson. These were fun, relaxed and hilarious shoot on which I met some wonderful talent.
Here is a little clip from the Jailbird which features actress Luci Fish and Kane Power.

Make-up to note in this video: Jenny (played by Luci) has been in a cell over night and just woken up feeling hungover and miserable. In this scene, I smudged black pencil eyeliner underneath her eyes to make it look as if make-up has slid over her face. Another trick was applying a thin layer of mascara on her top lashes and then, once the eyes were closed, pressing the lashes lightly onto the cheek to make a light imprint.
In order to recreate the slept in and tired look, I made Luci's face dewier and shinier than normal by using a paler shade of cream foundation to make her look worn. The shininess plays on the idea of making her look a little sweaty and dirty - classically hungover and embarrassed! No lipstick was worn for the same reason.
Luci's hair was made up and then undone in typical slept in style!
During the song, the scene jumps to a slightly "better made up" Jenny with perfect hair and flawless skin.
The other character that features in this clip is Rick (played by Kane). My soul focus in this scene was to make him look exhausted - he had been working a long shift so I applied a mixture of grey, dark purple and red greasepaints underneath his eyes and blended them into the under eye socket line where we get a natural shadow. I also concentrated on making him look pale to accentuate the tiredness in his face, and ruffled his hair to make him look a little unkempt.
During the song, Rick also looks cleaner and more presentable.
More information about Spilt Milk and full films for both will be unveiled once they have been released!

At the beginning of the week I had the great pleasure of working with The Corn Exchange in Newbury. I was there as part of my workshop in theatre makeup for their panto and I assisted the actor who is playing the part of Dick Whittington's Cat, Billy.

Makeup artists do a lot more than just makeup.... Filling an IV drip with fake blood is just part of the job.
Angel of Saigon was my most recent project with Fraught Productions. Easily the messiest job I've worked on!
