It is normal, healthy and an opportunity for brain development if your baby needs to be close to you during the day, for naps and for overnight sleep.

It is normal for babies to need to smell, hear and touch their parents or caregivers to be regulated daytime, nighttime, and to sleep well.

It is healthy for infants to be close to caregivers daytime and for sleep. When babies sense caregivers they get a safety signal in their brain. This leads to a transformation in physiology including: heartbeat, breathing, blood flow to their organs, deeper sleep and lower stress.

When infants are held a lot and sleep close to their caregivers it is an opportunity for their brain to thrive. It is also an opportunity for your parent brain to develop.

For babies closeness and touch night and day build : more stress receptors in the hippocampus to eventually build self regulation and stress management, more oxytocin receptors to strengthen relationships, the structure of the amygdala to regulate fear and anxiety and connections between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala to enhance later self regulation and mental health.

If your baby needs you to sleep it’s normal and heathy.
