As i didn’t do a tip Tuesday this week, oooppppss i forgot, i thought i would do Tip Thursday instead.

Now a bit of a disclaimer on this one. I’m not a scientist but I’ve learnt a bit about this subject over my 9 years as a nail technician. So I’m posting here as its a topic that comes up a lot and this might help.

I’m going to talk about Home gel nail kits and more importantly (in my opinion) products manufactured in China.

Over the last 5 years or so there has been a rapid increase in the number of people having allergic reactions to Gel polish. This i feel is due to the rapid increase in home gel kits, the massive popularity of builder in a bottle and products made in china.

Anyone can become allergic to a product or ingredient at any point and this is nothing new. The traditional allergy symptoms are itching, redness, swelling of the skin around the nails. It is very difficult without proper allergy testing to determine which ingredient in the system you have become allergic to.

Secondary to this is reactions to products not manufactured as stated. Symptoms of this are that the nails lift from the nail bed with discolouration. This is a new thing for our industry and it has come to light that products are being produced with much higher levels of certain ingredients than stated. Most commonly in builder in a bottle but can happen with any gel product. This means products may not cure properly although they appear set and can then seep through the nail to the nail bed. To my Knowledge this is mainly products produced in china where there are not as many regulations. These reactions may not happen immediately and can develop over time only happening a few years after using the product.

So if you are thinking of purchasing a home gel manicure kit please do your research. Buy products only manufactured in UK, EU or USA. Always buy the matching lamp for the system you are using so you know it will cure the gel correctly.

Better still go to a professionaland ask them about the products they use. The products i use are manufactured in the EU and USA and most are hypoallergenic or have very low levels of the most common ingredients that can cause allergy’s.
