Lots of illness around at the moment, so I thought I'd just share this as a polite reminder.

I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to read this. It may come across as me ranting, it really isn't meant to be taken that way, nor is it aimed at anyone. It's purely to give you an insight into what it's like to run a small business.

A reminder of my policy:
I require a minimum of 48 hours notice (from the start time of your booking, not two days before) for altering, rescheduling or cancelling your appointment otherwise I charge 50%.
On the day or a no show is 100% of the total booking.
THIS APPLIES FOR ANY REASON.
Late cancellation meaning less than 48 hours notice given.

Over the last 6 months I've been inundated with late cancellations. So much so it's lead me to add them up...133 hours worth!
Averaging at 22 hours a month.

I completely get that life gets in the way sometimes and you may be unable to attend your appointment.

Where possible I do try and fill your time slot to try to avoid you being charged. I have a large waiting list so often I can successfully fill it. Even with this in place, I've often been up to an hour back and forth messaging people to fill it. A lot of the time I do not have the time to be doing this, especially if it is short notice.
By all means you can message me at whatever time, as my phone is set to 'do not disturb' out of hours.
However please understand that although I work from home, I am not 'on call' to be dealing with these before I go to bed or as soon as I wake. It's taken me a lot of years to find a work/life balance and I have to have these boundaries in place.

I really dislike having to charge clients. To some it may seem unfair but please try to understand that when you cancel late you're not the only one cancelling because of illness, childcare issues, work commitments, transport problems etc. I have several hundred longstanding and regular clients, many of who have ongoing illnesses and extremely hectic and demanding lives. So whether your appointment is quick or lengthy, these all add up.
A lot of salons will have taken your card details and you would automatically be charged, even if they fill the slot again.
If you had tickets for an event and couldn't make it for any reason, you would not get your money back.

I feel like the beauty and hair industry are trying to pull together to normalise these sort of policies, as for too long it seems to have been acceptable for us to constantly be taking the hit on these sort of losses.

Yes I may work from home and there's always something I can be doing. That's not the point. These are the hours I set aside to earn my living. What you pay me is not my wage. I have overheads like any other business. My prices are calculated at me being at a certain capacity.

Yes I may be your friend but please respect that it is a business not something I do just to fill my time.

With Christmas coming up it's one of my busiest times of the year. Last December I had just over 40 hours of late cancellations, mostly due to illness. The vast majority of these I wasn't able to fill as it was too short notice for people to attend.

So should I ever end up charging you, please do bear all this is mind.

Thank you to all my wonderful clients for keeping me so busy. I've been overwhelmed with new clients this year for which I am really grateful for. I'm sorry that for many I have not been able to accommodate you, there's only one of me. For many years I have been a workaholic always saying yes. I'm trying to find a better work/life balance as much as I truly love what I do.
I love that each day is different in the variety of treatments that I do, the clients that I see and the conversations that we have.
