At first I rejected the idea of the Squeezy NHS Pelvic Floor muscle App having read a comment that it couldn’t be used discretely due to the image on the screen that you needed to watch whilst doing the pelvic floor exercises. After speaking with a physiotherapist that specialises in the pelvic floor the image on the app the commentator was referring to is part of doing the exercises effectively. The image gets smaller as a signal to lift up the squeeze. I’ve experimented and I find doing my pelvic floor exercises either laying down or sitting on a hard surface (my coffee table is my current go to place) rather than sitting on a comfy sofa or sitting on my bed is more effective in allowing me to notice the pelvic floor contracting during the squeeze. It also helps bring my awareness of my natural tendency to pull in and contract my stomach muscles, which is not advisable whilst doing pelvic floor exercises. So I’m learning to squeeze just the pelvic floor and not other parts of my anatomy. Hey it’s all learning in the Life School. Pull up from the a**s first, then contract the pelvic floor muscles and lift, lift, lift as though you are reaching up to the very tip of your finger. This was an analogy the physio used and it works for me as it’s helpful to have an image of how high I need to raise the squeeze. The app also then allows time to relax before beginning the next squeeze.

I went to see a physiotherapist yesterday who specialises in the pelvic floor. The physiotherapist’s advice did throw me but what has struck me is that in this new transition and phase of my life I am going to keep releasing the fear of the unknown and stay open to having fun finding out what kindness to myself now means. For now it means no squats; no core exercises with both legs lifted at the same time eg sit ups; no large range hip stretches and no weight lifting as these either mimic the birthing position or but pressure on the prolapse. After I found out yesterday I did feel a slight sadness about these restrictions as these are all activities I love to do. It’s an opportunity now for me to let go of what once served me and opening up to possibilities to discovering and rediscovering new loves. Once I’m up to it I’ll replace these activities with dance classes, gentler yoga classes and lovely walks in nature.
If you are experiencing (or experience in the future) any looseness in the pelvic floor or symptoms of prolapse it is worth investing in finding out how to do your pelvic floor exercises correctly and avoiding getting constipated. I found out from the physiotherapist that although my pelvic floor muscles are strong and I am able to achieve a contraction this does not lift very high. So ladies it’s not just the contraction of the pelvic floor during the exercises, it’s also the height of the contraction that’s important. I have downloaded the
Squeezy App (thanks Seema Fakey) which the physio also recommended. It’s £2.99 and I’ll use it not only to remember to do my pelvic floor exercises several times each day but also to help me lift higher - it is the lifting effect that will support the prolapse. I also found out that my pelvic floor muscles would work better if I relax them a little more, particularly when going to the loo. The physio has recommended doing some deep breathing exercises and allow the pelvic floor to relax. Thank goodness for Pranayama.
So ladies lift higher in every sense of the word and breathe deep. Here’s to elevation, let the breath take us there. Sat Nam 🙏🏼

Kegel exercises: A how-to guide for women Find out how to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.
I wanted to share that on Thursday I was diagnosed with a prolapse of the womb. I really wanted to share this with you all as I had completely stopped doing and pelvic floor exercises once my daughters were out of the baby stage. There was nothing suggested about doing them when I went for regular smears; at the ‘well woman checks’ or when I had the Marina coil fitted for Peri menopausal symptoms. I really want to spread the message to women about the importance of continuing to do pelvic floor exercises. In terms of the prolapse the only contributing factors I can find are that I had 2 big babies (8lb 7oz and 8lbs) and I’m now in Peri menopause (as I have the marina coil fitted I don’t actually know if Ive gone through menopause which is 1 year without a period). I’ve never smoked or been over weight which are the other risk factors. on. So just wanted so say please, please do your pelvic floor exercises xx.

Journey home
I’m on a beautiful journey.
Sometimes the ride is bumpy, other times smooth.
Sometimes the weather pattern changes and blows away what no longer serves me but I cling to it,
Reluctant to let go of the familiar.
To be present on the journey is what I’m here to learn,
step by step,
Breath by breath.
Sometimes there are long pauses and I don't move forward,
but then like a well rested traveler I’m back on my way.
