7 years of Chop Shop!

Here we are folks, another year in and another year of wild adventures and hair thrown on the floor!

When we started 7 years ago, we didn't even have a door to open! We had a chair, a table and a mirror. I had just enough money in my pocket to get myself back home and was fully invested in making this crazy thing work.

I don't know where to begin or where I would go with offering thanks and praise for those around me. The Red Brick crew have been incredible in giving me my dream and my home. You customers, clients, friends, whatever you are or became have allowed me to live my dream for these 7 years and I am hoping you will allow me to continue for many more!

I have absolutely no idea what the future holds, we have been working on some projects for a while and some for even longer that hopefully will come to fruition this year, so eyes peeled for that!

In the meantime, I will be continuing chopping hair, talking nonsense and listening to too much rock n roll. I will still not be taking enough pictures to satisfy social media algorithms and will be trying my best to respond to messages in some kind of timely fashion. As always, come hang out, let me play with your hair and let's keep doing this forever!

Tobi Gunn Forever

It is with an incredibly broken heart we say farewell to our tiny Tobi. Many of you got to meet him in the shop where he most certainly will have gotten under your feet or sat on your knee whilst I cut your hair and inevitably stole your heart.

Tobi lived his life not giving one single care about what anybody else thought, never did as he was told and was the most rock n roll dog ever. He came to us after Momma Gunn passed and we considered his time with us as his retirement. Tobi lived a very full and long life even though he was only in ours for a short time.

He was my best friend and I am going to miss him terribly.

Apologies for our silence during this time and I will get back to all of your messages as quickly as I can.

Bye Bye Beardiful

5 years ago I was clean shaven as the world entered into lockdown.

I decided to see how long I could grow my beard and let it do it's thing until present day. It has been a huge part of me and has been with me through some amazing and also some terrible times. It has served as a reminder of my determination and also holds many memories I am ready to relinquish.

The time has come to see what my face looks like beneath it.

I will be shaving it off in a few weeks for our chosen charities and will be accepting donations to these causes.

To celebrate the return of my tiny face we will hold an open day at The Chop Shop and will just hang out, listen to music and celebrate how boss life can be.

Strength to strength...

Sort of rounding out our entry into the sixth year of business is a little reflection again on how we got here. I have been so focused on where we are going and pushing through the next obstacle that often I forget how far we have come!

The first time we took the Chop Shop on the road at I was so nervous and didn't really know if i was ready to do it for real. It went so well that we had to turn people away! So we started looking for a real shop!

After a chance shopping trip to we got chatting with some people and it turned out they would have quite liked a barber in there... So I signed up 2 days later!

Our first real physical shop opened Halloween morning 2018. We had little more than the big orange chair, a table my brother in law built for me and a banner that said Ray Gunn's Chop Shop that I had made on my kitchen table for the roadshow events.

I remember those days so well, trying to convince passers by to take a chance on a new barber in the city, there were busy days and there were days where I didn't cut a single hair.

Second incarnation came as we moved across the market, this was the first time I knew we were onto something good and our crew of regulars was growing and their friends started appearing too. The global pandemic of 2020 put a nail in our coffin for a little while, but we booted that back off again once lockdowns were lifted and we got to be appointment only.

The third and current home of the Chop Shop is our proudest achievement. You all have made it into what it is, it is a secret doorway with a sign saying "f**k off" that you all still open! You all seem to understand and support this crazy dream of mine despite it never making sense! I cut hair, that's it, I love to do it and I will be doing it forever but I never in a million years would have imagined this. You have squashed my doubts and worries time and time again, you have saved me when I have been low and shared in our victories. I am here for you all and will be for a very long time!

Well, six years...

What can I say that will ever do justice to how wild this journey has been so far?

We started as a chair in my garage at the back of my house, then took it on the road to and then found our home here at

There has been more blood, sweat and tears put into this than many will ever know and it has been worth every drop! When we started, there was no way of ever knowing what was around the next corner and there have been struggles as great as our victories and everything in between.

The last 12 months have been quiet on the social media side in order to focus on in-shop stuff and it has seen us busier than ever. We will be returning to socials over the coming weeks and months and have some wonderful things to show you all!

Thank you, wholeheartedly and completely, for making this dream come true. For every haircut, hug, message and hangout it has been an absolute pleasure! For everyone that has supported us in the last year knowing the struggles we faced, your love has been what has kept us pushing on.

We are looking forward to this next step for the Chop Shop and the future is always unknown but always exciting!

On Tour!

Life has been an absolute whirlwind lately! The shop has been unbelievably busy and it has been absolutely awesome to welcome so many people through the doors! It is always amazing seeing new people come to the shop and equally as amazing having people come back again and again!

With all of that in mind, I want to say thank you to you all for your patience these past few weeks as I have been getting ready to head out on tour. There has been a poster on the door for a few weeks and all of you have seen my basses coming and going through the shop whilst I have been learning songs. You guys have supported me when I was worrying, cheered me on when I needed reassuring and pushed me to get back into playing music in a live environment!

We are now at the halfway point of the tour and it has been an incredible experience. There are a handful of shows left and a few more chances to dance!

I can't thank .colquitt enough for taking me out on the road again. The lads and for all the laughs and of course for making me loud!!!

All being said, I will be back to chopping hair again very soon (as well as in between shows!) so get yourself booked in, come hang out and I might tell you some tour stories!

Time To Talk...

It has been a short while since we last did any kind of social media stuff and it has been pleasant enough to focus energy just on chopping hair, being a barber and being a person!

However, the world needs the Chop Shop back in your feeds! There's a lot going on in the world and I am still reeling from the last 12 months in my own world, so let's see if we can make a change and bring some happy and peaceful stuff back to the socials?

What's been going on? Well, loads!

We accidentally missed the shop's 5th Birthday back in October so we got some plans in the pocket for a late celebration. You all have dancing shoes and I will sort your hair out so let's go hang out somewhere and eat cake right?

We had a little chat with our old mates and they posted a quick snippet of what was a lovely conversation. It's brought me into a lot of new people's lives and I am very thankful to welcome you all into my world.

There are, as always, some big plans on the horizon for the Chop Shop and I am very excited about the future. Again, I can't possibly find words to thank you all for the ongoing love and support over the years, especially the last one.

Back to work again!

Thank you to everybody for the love and support over the last few weeks, it has helped massively and been appreciated by the Gunn family and loved ones.

Time is right for me to get back behind the chair and start chopping again. The wise and observant amongst you, may realise the chap in the picture is not me, but is in fact Tobi Gunn! Tobi is going to be working in the shop most days and will be helping out about the place. He will be checking my cuts and giving his approval before you leave.

These first few weeks are going to be tough going and I really do appreciate everyone's patience and understanding.

So let's get back to it, get everything rockin and rolling again and get you all looking wonderful again.
