RED DUST HITS GREECE health warning for people to take care

The "red sand" or dust that has blanketed Greece in April 2026, particularly affecting Crete, is a massive plume of Saharan dust transported from North Africa by strong southerly winds.

The intense red and orange color is caused by iron oxides within the sand particles, which act as a natural filter, scattering sunlight and allowing only longer red and orange wavelengths to pass through.

Here is what is in the dust:
Mineral Particles: The dust is composed primarily of Saharan desert soil, including iron-rich particles, aluminosilicates, and minerals such as calcite, dolomite, and gypsum.
Fine Particulate Matter (PM10/PM2.5): The air has been heavily contaminated with high concentrations of fine particles—sometimes exceeding 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter—which pose significant respiratory risks, especially for vulnerable individuals.
Trace Metals: Studies of similar, high-concentration events show the dust can carry traces of heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, nickel, chromium, vanadium, and zinc.
Muddy Rain: As this dust cloud intersects with "Storm Erminio" (or similar weather systems), the rain combines with the red sand to create "mud rain," which is coating vehicles and buildings in a fine, muddy sludge.
