What are platelets?
Platelets are a specialized type of blood cell fragment which are reservoirs of natural growth factors.
Whenever we have an injury such as a cut or scrape, tiny blood vessels are ruptured. Special components in our blood immediately set about the healing and regenerative process. It is the growth factors in platelets that are responsible for this healing and regenerative process.
Platelets release their growth factors when they find themselves out of their normal environment which is in your blood vessels. This will occur when platelet rich plasma (PRP) is injected. We are imitating the natural regenerative process when we inject PRP. By making a tiny puncture wound with a needle we are also simulating an injury. Growth factors are used to heal this tiny wound and the large quantities of platelets injected during PRP treatment continue the regenerative process by releasing growth factors.
Growth factors are important in healing and tissue regeneration
• Growth factors stimulate collagen secretion, cell growth and tissue remodelling
• Growth factors stimulate development of new blood vessels and oil glands to improve skin nourishment

How are platelets extracted from your blood to provide PRP treatment?

First we need a little of your blood. This blood is drawn into special PRP preparation tubes and this is where cutting edge PRP tubes vary significantly.
PRP preparation is not a new technique. It was first used more than 35 years ago. What has changed significantly over the years is the method of PRP preparation.

What happens as our skin ages?

During the natural ageing process, many changes occur to our skin.
There is a loss of collagen and elastin and skin becomes less elastic. Wrinkles and sagging occurs. The epidermis loses lipids (fatty substances) that keep skin moisturized, further contributing to the wrinkle problem. Skin becomes thinner as we age - almost transparent in some cases - and loses a lot of the underlying fat layer that keeps young skin smooth and supple. Older skin also experiences a decrease in size or loss of oil and sweat glands over time, which contributes to dry skin. Exposure to ultra-violet light and certain medications and pollutants, can also weaken the skin and the blood vessels in the skin.
Skin's complexion and texture can change over time as well. Probably the most dreaded sign of aging skin is the appearance of age spots, also called liver spots, which are flat areas of dark pigmentation that often appear on the face, chest, hands, arms and shoulders
Another way in which skin changes as we age is in its ability to renew itself. Skin regenerates very fast in children, but the rate at which it renews gradually slows with age. Very old people's skin still regenerates, but it does so quite slowly.
Why not make use of the growth factors stored in the platelets in our blood to rejuvenate our skin, and to act as our insurance policy against these ageing effects?

Anti-wrinkle Injections

Overview

Commonly referred to as Botox, anti-wrinkle injections are used to smooth lines and wrinkles for a younger, more rejuvenated look. They are most often used to treat;

Botulinum toxin, often referred to as Botox® is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The toxin blocks the transition of chemical messages sent from the nerve to cause the muscle to contract. Without these messages, the muscle stays in a resting state until the ‘messengers’ recover. This recovery takes approximately 8 to 12 weeks on average.

After treatment it is expected that you will start to see an improvement within 2 or 3 days. The full result may be judged at 2-3 weeks. You may be invited to attend a review appointment at 2-3 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjustments to your personal treatment plan made, if necessary.

You will be advised to keep the target muscles active for a few hours and to avoid extremes of heat or cold, vigorous exercise, lying down or leaning over for 4-6 hours.

It may not ‘completely freeze’ the expression, particularly if extreme effort is exerted to make an expression. Botulinum toxin is not suitable for lines present without expression (static lines), your practitioner will advise you.

There may be only a partial reduction in movement this very much depends on�the amount administered and location of product placement – This is not a one size fits all treatment and may be tailored to suit your individual requirements and expected treatment outcomes – discuss this with us at the time of consultation.

All treatments carry a degree of risk. All risks and complications will be discussed with you at consultation and prior to any treatment being agreed. Botulinum Toxin should be administered by a healthcare professional with specialist training. Side effects include, but are not limited to:

Bruising
Swelling at injection sites
Redness at injection sites
Asymmetry of expression
Drooping of the brow, or eyelid
Headache or a sensation of ‘tightness’ or ‘heaviness’

Adverse events are uncommon, usually occur within a few days of treatment and are expected to be temporary, usually resolving spontaneously within weeks. We will provide aftercare advice designed to minimise risk and promote speedy recovery from any expected side effects.

Results tend to last 3-4 months Movement will begin recovering from 8 weeks Frequent treatment at intervals of less than 3 months is NOT recommended.
